i reckon if you spin, there are certain tunes that you just need to have in your collection. opinions may vary on excellence, but i feel sure there will be some crossover on the absolute greats.

one of mine would be the clapping song, by shirley ellis.
another would be tonto, naturally.
spanish eyes would be in my record bag more days than not, as would headhunters by herbie hancock. it would probably be quite close to something obvious from klang, like alter ego's transformer album.
there are others i consider to be essential, from slayer all the way over to the poets of rhythm, from atari teenage riot to groove armada, and a whole bunch inbetween.

what records would you be shocked your favourite DeeJay wasnt carrying?

i think we're alone now?(tiffany)
on a ragga tip?(sl2)
out of space? (prodigy)
ring my bell?(anita ward)
windowlicker? (aphex twin)

there are really too many to go through, i guess.
gimme your top three. or four or five.

(or six)

I've reached a point now where I either know exactly what a DJ will play, or I have absolutely no expectations whatsoever. But then, I don't go out to discos as often as I used to. However, there are certain tracks that I'd be amazed that I wasn't packing, on my increasingly infrequent turns on the decks...

And they would be:
The Clapping Song! (Shirley Ellis or the Anita Harris version...)
Betty Boo - Where Are You Baby?
Kenickie - Come Out 2Nite
David Bowie - Golden Years
Van Halen - Jump
Shangri-La's - Give Him A Great Big Kiss
Jonathan Richman - Roadrunner (Twice)

Make of that what you will...

I hate requests and clubs where djs take requests and I hate pointlessly eclectic sets so I say fuck it, there is NOTHING that a dj has to have in hir box.

Agreed, pretty much - my favourite DJs tend to be the ones I can trust to have exciting new stuff. So while usually what happens is that they will probably play something I've heard elsewhere in the recent past and I would be surprised if that didn't happen (eg, if there was a new Neptunes or DFA production out that everyone was talking about, I'd be surprised not to hear that), at the same time, I might go back three months later and have an urge to hear that same track, but in the end be glad that instead, more new stuff was played.

If they don't have the Ramones, they shall feel my wrath.

Obviously, the discerning dj would have a full complement of Kate Bush, Abba and obscure Bowie. The braver dj would have NIN and Slave Screams or Pinion. I was recently transfixed by the playing of Boinnie Tyler's Bright Eyes, lagging only slightly behind the unbidden pleasure of Charlene's Never Been To Me, or perhaps some Dusty Springfield or the Mamas and the Papas.

Clearly, if they play your favourite guilty pleasures, that's a joy, but I would far rather they surprised you with something of the same ilk that you haven't heard for aeons and it turns out to a stomper to dance to. Such is the playlist of the Readers Wifes. Best playlist ever!

Although it brutally displays my age, I must also praise the Readers Wives' playlist - for example, playing Bowie is good, but playing "The Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family" is inspired. You don't realise what a perfect dancefloor tune that is until you dance to it...

(Well, I say dance. More "bellow 'oo-oooo' excitably into Xoc's face...)

fair enough, i guess...
i wasnt really thinking of taking requests or playing pointlessly eclectic stuff, though.
i was looking more for DJpop, you know? the stuff that, in your opinion, transcends genre or does that 'making folks hit the floor' job really well.

like 'please dont touch' by motorhead.
or 'dont stop til you get enough' by micheal jackson.
or 'i feel free' by cream.

maybe i'd be better asking you what vinyl you would buy if someone had stolen all your records you had £100 to spend on new ones?
