The silly lovely delight that is Maira Kalman

Take a peek here and here for a sample of Maira Kalman's illustrated books for children. These are books I've read aloud to young friends fifty times. You know how kids want you to read the same thing over and over again until you want to scream? With these books, you'll be the one begging for a second, third, nth go. You might recognize the name: she's Mrs Tibor Kalman (of Colors Magazine, M&Co, etc.).

My favorite is the Max Series, featuring a dog poet who lives in New York but travels to Hollywood for fame and to Paris (of course) for love. There's also the Pete series, starring a very very hungry dog who becomes brilliant when he eats an encyclopedia (and then become an ordinary dog again when he poops it out).

Go, look, see. You can thank me later.

Dwight, those look lovely! I've need to get a Christmas present for my Goddaughter, want to get her something good and remembered that you'd written about illustrated children's books here. What kind of age are they aimed at? Amazon reckons it's a 4 - 8 reading age, but I don't know if by read they mean understand or interpret words -I wouldn't want to get something which will be deemed 'too old' for her and then forgotten about when she'd really enjoy them.

Then again, maybe I will buy some anyway and keep them in my grubby, sticky hands until she's four.

Sorry, I appear to have taken over your thread somewhat in order to talk about my Chrstmas present dilemmas. Maybe I should have started a 'What literature should I buy for the family' thread...

Hi Vincennes!

Those books might be a bit much for a child that's starting to enjoy reading along, and the pictures are dense and complex -- I would suggest that the Pete series would be more appropriate than the Max series. It's not so easy to guess what any particular child will find appealing, but from what children have told me, they're in it for the cuddle at least as much as the book itself.

I hope you get a chance to look these over in person.

"Oooh, La La, Max in Love" is probably my all time favorite book to read aloud. Fun wordplay, true poetry, great story, and wild art.

brb: You can thank me later.

That time is 3 years later. brb, I was completely stuck on what to get the above-mentioned Goddaughter for Christmas (she is 5), then remembered this thread from ages ago and got her What Pete Ate from A-Z to go with the book she asked for. So thank you very much indeed - I would no doubt still have been having angst about it or trooping round London staring at stuff without your advice!
