Recently I saw a show about one of the first punk rock festivals in China and some of the rock bands in China. All I can say is I really really like Crystal Butterfly and I want to hear more. I found this on youtube.com and I like what I hear. I only heard what was seen on the show and what they have on youtube and I like it tons alot! It's like japanese visual kei but lighter in tone.

Anthem - Bound to Break cover

Anthem is one of my favorite Japanese Power Metal bands from the mid 80's. They take a no nonsense approach their music that was hard and heavy at the time and still is to this day. Hiroya Fukuda is one of my guitar heroes that I wished I could play like when I was young. His riffs were always hard hitting and crunchy and very melodic and catchy.

It is a shame that little is known about them elsewhere and no music videos were made at the time but they did release a live concert of them in the Valley area in the mid to late 80's. If only I'd known they were there, I would have definitely wanted to see them in concert.

Anthem - Night after night
Anthem - Shed
Anthem - Wild Anthem
Anthem - Shadow walk
Anthem - Gypsy Ways
Anthem - Hunting Time
Anthem - Juggler Music Video
Anthem - Empty Eyes
Anthem - Venom Strike

Earthshaker Midnight Flight cover

Earthshaker is one of my favorite Japanese Metal bands because of the awesome talents of Masafumi "Marcy" Nishida the vocalist, Shinichiro "Shara" Ishihara the guitarist and the other group members. Their music is like oriental pop oriented with touches of sadness that fill in the music that I enjoy alot since my childhood and still do til this day.

The 1st vocalist for Loudness, Minoru Niihara was the vocalist for Earthshaker after leaving for Loudness and before being replaced by Masafumi "Marcy" Nishida. Some of the similar bands of the era of Heavy Metal I can say are like Dokken and Bon Jovi somewhat but Earthshaker was around before them or around the same time if I remember correctly...

Marcy is one of the best vocalists who sings with great vocals tinged with saddness and the lead guitars of Shara also have the same effect on me. They got their name from an album title from the group Y&T entitled Earthshaker. So here is earthshaker!!!

Earthshaker - More
Earthshaker - Earthshaker
Earthshaker - Marionette
Earthshaker - Radio Magic
Earthshaker - the Night we Had
Earthshaker - 流れた赤い血はなぜ
Earthshaker - Fugitive
Earthshaker - TOKYO
Earthshaker - 記憶の中
Earthshaker - Whiskey and Woman
Earhtshaker - Treachery
Earthshaker - Tada Kanashiku

소녀시대(少女時代

Still in South Korea and listening to the music on the music waves over here. X Japan will be here soon! I'm waiting to get my concert ticket!!! I really like Zudy. Her song is very catchy and sort of a mixture of Kpop and Jpop. I also like Sori for some candy coated Pop music and Girl's Generation and the others here. Here are some Korean Pop tunes or K-Pop as they call it, that I kind of dig and am listening to recently.....

So, a question for some of you; where would you recommend looking to get some of this stuff? I've turned Boston upside-down trying to find some albums by Buck-Tick and Phantasmagoria, and I'm coming up with bupkis.

Internet shopping is probably the only way to get Phantasmagoria and Buck Tick. If they have a Japanese Town in Boston you might want to check if they have a record store. You might want to try www.ebay.com or www.amazon.co.jp or www.cdjapan.co.jp for some internet shopping... Phantasmagoria is very hard to find nowdays, they only released singles but they did release a compilation CD in the states which is very rare called Splendor of Sanctuary if you can find one. good luck!

I am not sure if anyone has mentioned him earlier in this thread, and I'm not going to write much of a comprehensive overview. I've listened to his music (what little was available at the time) for close to a decade now. Currently he is one of my favorite musicians from any region of the world.

He is the massacre, World's End Girlfriend. He is incredible.

44 Magnum Danger cover
Grand Metal 5th Japan Heavy Metal Fantasy cover

44 Magnum was like the Japanese Motley Crue. I heard about them and other bands from Grand Metal the 5th Japanese Heavy Metal Fantasy 2 lp set my step father got for me. After hearing these lps I was hooked on Japanese Metal and Metal from the Orient in the 80's. Some other bands off that album were Blizard, a band influneced by Ozzy and Randy Rhoads, Rajas, a band with a female lead singer who can sing with the female rock greats, to name a few.

44 Magnum's style is like Motley Crue and other LA Metal Bands from the same LA 80's scene. They have mean driving rhythms in some songs and they have a softer side to them with the ballads.

I like and got most of 44 Magnums albums. Danger, Street Rock and Roller, Actor, Still Alive. I wanted to check out others but being on a budget constricted me from getting more of the cds at the time.

Looking back and hearing these brings a feeling of happiness of my childhood on a time well spent.

44 Magnum - I'm On Fire
44 Magnum - I Just Can't take Anymore
44 Magnum - Street Rock and Roller
44 Magnum - Nightmare
44 Magnum - Too Late to Hide
44 Magnum - Love Desire
44 Magnum - Satisfaction Grand Metal 84
44 Magnum - Your Heart
44 Magnum - No Standing Still

Rajas

Another great band from the Grand Metal live album was Rajas. The female singer Kuniko Morikawa can sing with the other best female lead singing greats like Doro from Warlock or Lita Ford.

This is the first band I know that Crazy Cool Joe was in from Dead End fame. He was the bassist here first. Their style was like the LA 80's metal scene but with distinct Japanese style to them.

They were also on the compilation album Battle of Metal and released several EPS and LPS with Shara of Earthshaker fame producing them. RAJAS EP and The Turn It Up LP have some of my favorite songs such as the catchy song Liar.

Rajas is definitely one of my favorite Metal Bands of my youth with the beautiful Kuniko Morikawa singing metal melodically with the best of them....

Blizard - Blizard of Wizard cover
Another band I like alot from the Grand Metal album is Blizard. I think they got their name from the Ozzy Osbourne album Blizzard of Ozz. The guitarist Toshiya Matsukawa did a dedication album called Ran Burning for the late great Randy Rhodes the 1st guitarist of Ozzy Osbournes solo endeavor.

Their sound is Asian Metal at their finest. Guitars that roar reminincent of Randy Rhoads to Joe Perry of Aerosmith fame. The bassist is very tight and aggressive and the vocalist is very charismatic and sings very well.

Though the albums were released a long time ago they recently released the cds but are now out of print and fetch a high price tag on the collector's markets. Here is a sampling of Blizard...

Blizard - In the Middle
Blizard - Lady Stardust
Blizard - Broken Loneliness
Blizard - Fly High
Blizard - Fire of Desire
Blizard - Show Me the Way
Blizard - Overheat
Blizard - Boy
RAN(Toshiya Matsukawa) - Illusion
THE ADOLESCENT - TOSHIYA"RAN"MATSUKAWA (BLIZARD,TWINZER)
Blizard - Shade of Blue

Dead End

Dead End is back!!!! I finally got the special edition Metamorphosis cd with dvd and am I glad I got it! It will stand as one of my new treasures on the cd rack.

Listening to the new Dead End album brings back tears of joy to half a life time listening to them. Their same signature sounds redone for the 21st century! It doesn't sound metal or alt but like a combination or a transition to both.

More bluesy than the other albums they released and Yuji Adachi remains as one of my favorite guitarists ever. His weeping and sweeping sounds on the guitar like on the solo for Baby Kill Me is what he is known for. And his scratch picking and search for new sounds like in God Monkey remain delicious to the ears.

Morrie is also experimenting and stretching his vocal ranges with the schizo type singing that he sort of started
and which is prevalent in some facets of Visual Kei music. Listen to him in Devil's Sleep and Guillotine and it doesn't sound like the same person singing rather he is like channelling spirits and evoking different voices from beyond....

Crazy Cool Joe and Minato seem a bit low key in this outing but before they shined and flourished in their respective rhythm section sections in the past or maybe I need to listen to them more because their sections sort of sneak up on you where they are not doing the obivious.

Amazing release from an amazing band to this day....

Dead End - Devil's Sleep
Dead End - Game of Skyscraper
Dead End - Incarnation
Dead End - God Monkey
Dead End - Kill Me Baby
Dead End - Dress Burning
Dead End - Guillotine
Dead End - Ultimate Fuse
Dead End - Venus Dummy and Princess

L'Arc en Ciel

L'Arc en Ciel which means roughly the ark of the light or Rainbow in French is an amazing band which started in 1991. You can sort of hear the influence from the wake and shadows of Dead End in their music but they take it to other places, more in tune with modern music at this and at that time.

Here is a sampling of one of the forefront Visual Kei and J rock artists L'Arc en Ciel...

L'Arc en Ciel - finale
L'Arc en Ciel - Time to say Goodbye live 1995
L'Arc en Ciel - Taste of Love

Creature Creature

The band Creature Creature continues to amaze. With their new deluxe cd dvd entitled Inferno, they are carrying forth to embrace new bolder musical ideas with their sound where few artist even dare to go. This album packs more of a punch than their previous self titled release as well.

Songs from the demonic like opener to the angelic end, they have created a masterpiece of modern J rock. Sakura who used to be with L'Arc en Ciel is now with them and some other players from other famous Visual Kei bands.

Morrie is expanding his vocal range and stretching it to newer areas where we haven't heard him try before. I am in constant awe of Morrie, who is one of the progenitors who, others follow in the visual kei scene. He continues to push the envelope in this band who is not afraid to experiment with a cohesion of metal, alt, jazz that is demonic and angelic at the same time.

Here is their first Music Video off their deluxe cd Inferno......

re: trying to find obscure/weird records in boston or cambridge:

my first gut instinct would be to hit up weirdo records on mass ave between central and harvard. it's tiny, but packed to the gills with more or less what's on the tin. it's the kind of place where you can buy cheap dvdrs of old exploitation films, ethiopiques or afrobeat comps, and a recording of a one armed fiddler playing old time all in the same shopping trip. if they don't have it they may likely know where to order it from.

pretty much all the asian music i know is punk, hardcore, noise, or metal.

japanese punk has been pretty hyped in the states for years, and i'm finally getting past my hype aversion and starting to be able to appreciate it. in short, a lot of american punk bands half ass it and phone it in. japan is expensive to live in, expensive to get practice space in, and harder to get a show in, from what i understand. bands also, from what i've been told, typically practice for about a year before playing out. in a style of music where intensity is highly valued, the higher level of workmanship can really pay off sometimes. and the bands that get it together to tour outside of asia are generally the ones that are much more together than the ones that don't. a lot of it is very much like discharge, but often much noisier or more melodic. i wasn't that impressed with a lot of bands over the years that i saw, but part of that could just be being stubborn and sick of hearing about it, because for a couple years running it seemed like all anyone was playing was imitation discharge or imitation 80s thrash/crossover, and i got awfully sick of it.

seeing crude twice at chaos in tejas last year kind of brought me around. solid, aggressive, good songwriting, good musicianship, high energy - it was a pretty great package, and seeing them followed by harvey milk and eyehategod was pretty great. bastard this year was also really solid. i think their reunion "tour" was just two shows, one in tokyo and one in austin.

i like some japanese oi, but it may be partially out of unintentional hillarity. see youtube for the video of cobra looking like they came straight off the terraces into a motley crue stage show.

gallhammer by all rights out to be an annoying novelty, but i think they're pretty solid. three tiny waif japanese girls playing very slow, raw depressing music drawing heavily on amebix and early black metal. some of the vocals get borderline crushed throat ghost girl from juon, to the point that i actually turned something else on instead when i was listening to them alone way late at night in my room, because i just found it kind of unsettling.

are boris from japan?

i like melt banana, but i feel like they dropped off about five years ago and their live act started getting pretty boring. like they went from being experimental to just being a rock band with a lot of weird sounds. according to rumor, they also speak perfect english and play up the engrish for stage presence reasons.

D'erlanger

D'erlanger isn't a nonsense name as I thought it was but rather a name of a French Family. So much for research going into writing this thread but I just jumped in without checking some facts. Sorry. I think the early New Age Attack movement were bands like Buck Tick, Dead End, and D'erlanger with newer younger bands that came out later were exploring different facets of Japanese rock like the visual kei hipsters X Japan, and other bands like Luna Sea, and L'Arc en Ciel following suit.

Speaking of D'erlanger, they have been releasing some new cds and dvds and I am still in awe of this band who have been around before there were classifications such as Visual Kei. They have a striking sound and image and

Cipher the guitarist I remember was a young talent they were saying to look out for in the Japanese music magazines. He likes to explore new and traditional rock sounds on the guitar and it shows in tracks like After Image and some of his newer songs. He might have influenced other bands around at the same time while D'erlanger was a bit underground.

The rhythm section with Tetsu on drums and Seela on bass are tight and aggressive to mind blowing. They search for new ways to play instead of playing it safe with the safe old rock standards and conventions.

Kyo is a great vocalist with romanticism to raw angst. He was in another band called Die in Cries which I've been meaning to check out but haven't since having a budget for expensive Asian music.

My favorite albums from D'erlanger so far are the 1st three. The 1st is La Vie en Rose. The 2nd is Basilisk and the 3rd is Lazzaro. The 4th one has grown on me too. Here are some selections of D'erlanger.

D'erlanger - Kain - Dummy Blue
D'erlanger - Incarnation of Eroticism
D'erlanger - Taboo
D'erlanger - Masquerade
D'erlanger - After Image
D'erlanger - 柘榴

also funny:

during the annual chaos in tejas fest in austin, texas, most of the japanese punks stay at a friend of a friend's house.

the cultural exoticization apparently cuts both ways. they're all wicked into the idea of texas (does that sentence give away me being from new england at all?), and they all apparently really wanted to do speed, eat steak, and shoot guns. and one of them got a texas tattoo.

Hangry Angry is a band of two pop punk princess popsters that I heard and saw recently on tv. The two music videos and songs are esquiste and I hope you enjoy them. I'm hunting for their 1st cd dvd release to hear them more....

Liv Moon is like the Nightwish of Japan. Operatic Metal to die for.....

Flatbacker

Flatbacker EZO's old moniker is a band I really really admire. I happened to see them at the Country Club when Fastdraw played there. They didn't play that night but they were there supporting another Japanese band whose guitarist is brothers with Flatbacker's Shoyo.

Flatbacker sounds punky and metallish at the same time. It has been quoted that the singer Masaki sounds like Ronnie James Dio or Klaus Meine with a touch of demonic possession and you can hear it from this amazing singer.

I just wish there were more albums from this amazing Japanese import....

The only groups that have held any appeal to me were Boris (Japanese group that has experimented with every album, and got their name from a Melvins song), Acid Mother's Temple (rock group that simply doesn't give a shit) and DJ Krush (master of the atmospheric and trippy). There's also this post-rock outfit called Mono, but I've only heard one album by them (Hymn to the immortal wind.)
