Vertigo hardcovers

Wouldn't it be great to have hardcover versions of Morrison and other DC Vertigo works in Hardcover. Invisibles, Doom Patrol, Gaiman's Book of Magic, Moore's V for Vendetta are works I would buy in Hardcover format. Let's hope there is a 20th anniversary Hardcover signed and numbered Watchmen. What would you like to see in Hardcover. The only Morrison works in Hardcover are Arkham Asylum, Mystery Play, and the X Men. Hardcovers with extras would be awesome.

OK, I'll bite. Why? What specifically about the hardness of the cover is currently unsatisfying in your trade paperbacks? The information contained within is the same... is it that you tend to subject your books to unusual pressures and strains that destroy soft covers?

I resent hardcovers, same as in 'real' book-land. Too bloody expensive, and you have to wait ages to read a story you're interested in (in my case, the recent Sgt Rock hardcover). I like floppiness, matron.

Admittedly 'Earth2' is pretty sexy-special, but by and large...pfffeh.

I loan my softcovers out to spread the news of good comics but my friends sometimes destroy or bend the covers. A good hardcover would endure.

Wasn't that Superman: It's A Bird a Vertigo book? I heard that was pretty good, and got lots of good reviews in the mainstream press...

Books look like female sexual organs to me. Caress the spine and soak up the moist words. I don't know about you.

I actually prefer softcovers to hardcovers, especially those hopelessly awkward, too heavy to hold in one hand Marvel hardcovers that I have to rest on pillows in my lap to read (though I suppose some in this thread might consider that a positive). Actually I go back and forth on that--they are beautiful books, and I do like them simply as art objects, and hey, I did buy Giuseppe's NXM run in that format just for the sheer elegance and permanence of the books. But for actual reading, they are pretty damned inconvenient. Give me a lightweight, flexible TP over one of those monstrosities anytime.

I hate how expensive they are.

If I weren't poor maybe I wouldn't hate 'em as much.

I own only a few anyway.

It's a Bird... is an excellent book. I was going to wait for the trade but I got it fairly cheap on Ebay. It probably won't be a tenner under in trade because they'll go for the same paperstock for Kristiansen's paintings.
I'm not sure if it has re-read value for some reason, It came shrinkwrapped and I only read it once so I might sell it. Not sure.

Morrison's quote on the cover couldn't be more apt.

It is spellbinding and timely.

I like Vertigo for putting up affordable trades of their series. Y the Last Man goes for 12.95 with six or seven issues. Same with 100 Bullets.

Somebody at Icon/Image needs to know that paying 20 for six issues of Powers and a fuckin' useless interview is outrageous.

And my god, that is a hilarious summary.

Interesting.

I'm currently in France enjoying a wonderful range of comics; Aside from the BD I was looking for the book that leapt out at me more than any other was a softcover version joe sacco's safe area gorazde. Having said which' French softcovers tend to be thicker than UK/US versions.

There is certqinly room for improvement when it comes to the format of softcover collections.

The DC hardcovers seem designed just to take your money, they give you the same stuff as in a trade, the exact same pages, but just ten dollars more.

Personally, I love the Marvel hardcovers. They're cheaper than trades, and the bigger pages are great. Admittedly, some of them are a bit unwieldy. The 39 issue Ultimate Spider Man book was a bit tough, but for only $35, it was a great value too.

Depends, realy. I like hardcovers if the rest in a given series are hardcover (ex. both my League of Extraordinary Gentlemen trades are in hardcover).

However if it doesn't fit with the rest of the softcovers I have (ex. my copy of "Tarnished Angel" is hardcover, but my other three Astro City trades are not), or doesn't fit a general cover scheme (ex. I have the original cover scheme for "Planetary: All Over the World and Other Stories", but the secondary color scheme for "Planetary: The Fourth Man", and the hardcover of "Planetary: Leaving the 20th Century", so they don't fit well together). And, finally, there are the hardcovers that just won't fit on your shelf (ex. "Aria: The Soul Market", or "1602"). At those times, I think I'd prefer softcover just so everything matches (I'm a freak for that). Hardcovers are also difficult to maintain sometimes, because the dustjackets are often annoying to keep on the right way. I almost never buy hardcover novels, too expensive, but hardcover trades are only a couple bucks more and my FLGS/FLCS has a 20% cover price discount, so its not a real big deal. Generally, though, I like the aesthetics of hardcovers. They just look so much nicer than softbacks.

That being said, I don't have any of the Vertigo hardcovers (though "It's a Bird..." just looks really nice in hardcover, I gotta say), though I pay pick up some of the hardcover Sandman stuff at some point.
