Grey Area goes to London...

So I seem to have managed to convince a company that it's totally worth their while to fly me into London for two days to perform some consultancy magic for them. I've got one night in the nation's capitol, probably between the 2nd and 3rd of November, and damn it all but I want to do something interesting!

Recommendations? Anyone putting on a play or gig? Getting totally blitzed, skundered, blotto or pissed is not an option as I need to be able to earn my keep in the morning (not to mention find the plane home), but a mellow drink or two wouldn't go amiss.

Well I think it is so funny that no one has answered this yet. I blame the idea that no one here really does go out without the plan to blow off work the next day except ex-pat Amerikans like me.
Where are you coming from?
Anyway, Mouse on Mars is playing on the 1st of November, not sure where. Anthony and the Johnsons are playing on the 2nd at the Academy, which I may go to. And the 4th Drones Club is on in Stoke Newington at the Eye on the 4th November. Otherwise, I think Tuesday nights in London are pretty benign, unless we call a barbegathering.
Anyone?

Bang on the nail there, Lilly Nowhere. Not easy to get out and socialise early in the week, when there's hard stuff to do the next day. The reward would be Grey Area's bavardage but I have to get up early in the morning and speed to Beckenham and some puerperal mothers who are not happy. Shame. Sorry, GA.

Yeah, I figured the mid-week thing would throw a spanner in the works. Well, it was worth entertaining the notion for a bit...next time I'll get them to fly me over on a weekend.

This is a poor show.
If all else fails, and you find yourself central, I'm likely be on for a couple of mellow drinks, GA. A couple of mellow drinks is my middle name.

Maybe people are just planning on staying in watching the coverage of a rather important election occuring on November the 2nd?

But for a venue - What about the smoothie/hot choc place in Soho Anna De L. was talking about recently? Failing that - a central london pub as usual?

And there is always the market porter - a great, if busy, pub that has greater beer - definitely worth a visit if you only have a short time - and if you can't drink much isn't it an idea to make sure the beer you do drink is top notch?

Hey, if we can find a pub that shows the election coverage than I'm all for this. God knows I'll probably need a drink.

That sounds sensible. Maybe, although I hate to say it, an American bar? Canadian, maybe, as a compromise but one that may well be taking a keen interest? Journo bar? Or a freshener somewhere - the recounts may go on long into the night....

The ICA is apparently doing an election party type thing with Aimee Lame...

Cool. That gets my vote.

Yeah, that does sound good. The only thing is though, and it's not an insurmountable obstacle by any means, but what about advance tickets ? It seems like they might be a good idea

Oh hooray, that sounds so good!

It's a free event (apart from membership, which can be the dead-cheap day membership), so you can't book in advance, can you? You just have to turn up early and bagsie a table or two.

7pm to 1am. Yeah, I can see myself sitting in the ICA bar for 6 hours.

Hmmm. I do hope Grey Area is up for this. GA?

I'm up for it. My presence will however be dictated by the amount of work I have to to between day one and day two of the consultancy thing...if it turns out that I have to slave over my laptop on a powerpoint presentation, I might have to bow out at the last moment.

Anna, I'm not sure if that was an ironic statement, or not.

I'm not sure either, I can't remember how hard the seats are.

Apparently I will be working in Watford, and the company's putting me up in Watford. What is there to do in Watford? Not very much, apparently. There was a concert hall, but that's closed. Two clubs with iffy reputations. And a comedy venue. Plus, I assume, a smattering of charming local pubs. Either way, it looks like the fates are conspiring to make this a trip centred around work and nothing else. Watford. I ask you.

You can get a train from Watford junction to Euston that will take half an hour at most. I believe it runs until 2am though you'd need to check that. I strongly suggest going in to London. I would not suggest going to Destiny, Chicago, Area or anywhere else in Watford town centre unless you particularly like meat markets and very frightening people. Trust me, I lived locally from the age of 12 until I was 18. The cinema is miles away.
