I saw the debut about a year ago, and a few months ago they started the ongoing series. It's pretty fucking funny.

For those of you who don't know, Johnny Quest was the son of Dr. Quest, and together with bodygaurd Race Banyon and Hadgi (an indian orphan Dr. Quest rescued, I think) they went off and had adventures involving science and shit. Pretty standard Hanna-Barara stuff.

The Venture Brothers is purposely built to resemble this, except it's ten times as funny. Lot's of great lines, such as the Monarch's (Dr. Venture's half-assed arch-enemy) after exiting the bathroom. His assistant/girlfriend Dr. Girlfriend asks "how'd it go in there?" and he replies "Ah, it was all sound and fury, signifying nothing".

Also good is the barely restrained aggression of Brock Samson, Dr. Venture's body gaurd, who has a License to Kill and a mullet.

Anyway, check it out. It's good.

I love, love, love this show. I actually plan my Sundays around it, sad as that is. Its so ridiculously outrageous. Is there any other show on tv that can make an abortion joke and a Kafka joke, in the same episode no less? I think not. And the score! J.G. Thirlwell! Absolutely phenomenol. I hope they're smart and release a soundtrack. Its just too perfect not to. Ben Edlund even co-wrote one of the episodes. I think it was the second one.

I've heard good things about this, esp. their recent Fantastic Four parody... but I don't have cable.

this show is fucking hysterical. i mean, Brock is testosterone personified, Dr. Venture's a semi-sleazy cynical middle-aged weasel of a mad scientist, Hank and Dean are weenies, H.E.L.P.E.R.'s a robot spaz ... what's not to like?

plus, of course, there's the Monarch (listed under "M" for "MONARCH!" ... or possibly under "T" for "THE MONARCH!") and all his idiot minions and Dr. Girlfriend.

it's so quotable, too:

"i'm sure you'll find it much more luxurious than living over Dr. Venture's garage like so much Fonzie"
"well, i suppose the muscular one's OK, but the kid is just going too far. can't we just use the puppet like last time?"
"one of them was dressed like a cheerleader, but she had a Caesarian scar and more lines on her face than a mirror at Studio 54"

Seriously? That's freakin' awesome. I'm still waiting for that guy to finish The Tick #13.

Did anyone see the pilot that aired waaaaaay back, like a year ago? The Ventures head out towards the U.N. and hijinks ensue. Brock kills a mummy, also an alligator.

why is nobody watching or talking about this show? in my book, it's on par with Arrested Development as one of the best comedies on TV, if not the best shows on TV, period.

the writing is just so tight. while most of the episodes work well as hysterically funny standalone pieces, there's a season-long slow burn going on that just flat-out blows up in the last two regular episodes. it's the kind of thing that's good enough when you see it the first time, but once you realize where everything's going, and you watch everything the second time through, the way things build up is absolutely masterful. the pacing, the character development, the comedy - everything is just so high-quality.

and, frankly, it's raised the bar for the rest of the [as] lineup, since it has humor that's just as absurd, bizarre, and brilliant as anything on ATHF or Sealab, but much smarter and sharper.

i mean, for god's sake: Tiny Attorney. hot panda milk. Major Tom. the Krumpus. Tijuana rules strip poker. the PSA for Acute Testicular Torsion. MechaShiva. the wrath of the monarch. Smurfs being mammals. this... homeboy figurine.

why is this slipping through the cracks? if this doesn't get picked up for a second season, i'm going to send my walking Swedish murder machine to go sickhouse on your asses.

Ben Edlund even co-wrote one of the episodes. I think it was the second one.

Chris McCulloch (aka Jackson Publick) was a writer on both TV versions of The Tick (animated and live-action). he considers Ben Edlund his mentor, and Edlund co-wrote the "Careers in Science" episode. there's definitely a Tick-esque sensibility about the whole show, with the lame super-characters and whatnot.

the live-action show was also where McCulloch met Patrick Warburton, who does the voice of Brock Samson.

This too is one of my favorite shows currently and has caused many a sleepy morning at work (i go in at 4:45am) because i had to watch it.

"I was the first DJ at my college to play the Bauhaus"
"Doesn't that make you 60?"
"No, just cool!"

...it has humor that's just as absurd, bizarre, and brilliant as anything on ATHF or Sealab, but much smarter and sharper.

Precisely. ATHF and Sealab are too weird for weird's sake for me, but the Venture Bros. writing is good enough to have lines like, "A little bird told me--but don't blame Tiny Eagle" as complete throwaways amidst the real dialogue.

"one: you're totally gay. two: she's hot, and you're an albino. three... you're totally gay."

you've totally got to admire the confidence of people who can create characters that are as unique and funny as, say, Manic 8-Ball and Girl Hitler ("ohhhhhh.... tiger bomb!"), and casually kill them off. they're just flaunting the abundance of creativity they've got there. i mean, christ, if the people who created ATHF had created Manic 8-Ball, he'd have his own t-shirt, a stuffed animal, and maybe a spinoff of his own by now. nothing against ATHF, but this is on another level.

i think my favorite brilliant throwaway concept from this show has to be one of Doctor Girlfriend's previous supervillain incarnations:

"I used to be The Deadly Au Pair. I was feared and respected, and not just by my Murderous Moppets!"

the show's really dense like that. there's just so much material crammed into every episode, but not in a way that makes it seem labored or forced. that works well with the recurring subplot elements, like Dr. Venture's weird dreams or the way the whole Doctor Girlfriend/Monarch rift plays out.

i've also got to say i appreciate all the little pop culture references that let me know i'm smack in the middle of their target demographic. when i hear things like "oh, look, there's a picture of me at Danceteria, making out with Stiv Bators and Lydia Lunch!" and see plots that hinge on the outcomes of old D&D games, it just warms the cockles of my heart to know that someone's making shows for ex-goths who were into gaming.

Not as good as when Brock kills the crocodile.

"Just the same, sir, I'm going to have to confiscate your knife."

[cue insanity music, complete with bulging temple vein and twitching eye]

"Go ahead....take it from me."

Soon, this show will be on in the UK, as our domestic version of Bravo is launching its own 'Adult Swim' segment after midnight on Fridays (all right, Saturdays). ATHF, Sealab, Space Ghost CTC, Brak and Harvey Birdman will all be showing, joined by Robot Chicken, Perfect Hair Forever and The Venture Brothers.

Having long been insanely envious of the fact that our American contributors get to watch not only grown-up anime, but killer shows like these on their TV channels, I will be tuning in to see if the latter three shows named above, which I haven't yet seen, stand up beside the first five, which I have and needless to say rate highly. If they don't I shall be disappointed.

That was a strangely flat, subclause-heavy post, wasn't it? Forgive my lack of style. Truly, one early start and a can of Boddington's and I'm useless.

(This was not a paid endorsement.)

I would say that the Venture Brothers is better than all of the above-mentioned shows, with the possible exception of Harvey Birdman. As fantastic as Venture Brothers is, is doesn't have Stephen Colbert as Phil Ken Sebben.

Anyone see the second season opener? good stuff.

The opening montage was actually quite heartfelt and beautiful. I hunted down that shitty Aquagen song the very next day.

I agree with Tuna Ghost; VB and Birdman are probably the two best shows made for Adult Swim. They both have excellent voice actors and they're extremely imaginative & funny. You really have to watch each episode a couple of times to get every joke, since you don't hear some of them while you're laughing you ass off at all the others.

I'm not sure why, but the first episode in VB season 2 didn't seem to me to be as funny as the average first season episode. Maybe they had to squeeze in more plot than jokes for my taste in order to finish up the cliffhanger bits from the last episode of season 1. Regardless, this is one of the funniest shows on TV. I can't wait to see more Season 2! Glad to hear it's coming soon to those of you in Britain!

I agree that the Season Two opener was perhaps a bit subpar, though it was better than the bottom rank of Season One eps.

I blame the need for extensive exposition.

Also, it's worth noting that it was still fucking hilarious.

Looks like Adultswim.com has expanded The Fix streaming videos section from Friday nights to, well, all the time. Tonight's VB episode, Hate Floats, is currently up, but I don't know how long it will be there. I thought that anyone who missed it or who lives in the UK might like to check it out there.

I, for one, absolutely adore the name of Brock's nemesis/lover.

Molotov Cocktease.

Sweet!

And the first season episode with the pirates and the ghost ship and the crash-landed spaceship ranks as one of the coolest and funniest things EVER.

Well, that sucks, Fat Lee! I never would have thought that the video stream would be restricted to US viewers only. (As if it would kill them for someone in another country to see a streamed episode--ugh.) In that case, I hope that the Friday lineup starts very soon!

This season has been really funny so far. Molotov Cocktease as a fill in for Brock while he is hunting down his old mentor (a cross between Hunter S Thompson and Nick Fury) is the best thing on tv in a year.

That Scooby Doo parody almost killed me.

"So why don't you and Groovy go look for clues?"

"Clues to why I don't chain you to the back of my van and road haul you until you're nothing but a pelvis wearing a belt."
