I wasn't sure whom to ask directly so I'm posting this here. Recently I started a thread about Spyware in Conversation, which meandered into an amateur investigation of an ad company I've been working with. They found the thread, explained how and why they're legit, and now they're asking if I could please do something about that thread which is coming up #1 when they Google their company name.

I realize the idea of deleting posts relevant to the company at their bequest has something distasteful about it, but if mods/Tom are willing I'd rather do that than go back into the thread and lobby for them (as they suggested). But I will do the latter if Barbelith prefers.

Can't you do the deleting yourself, just by using the "edit post" tabs? Or are there posts by other users you want to get rid of too?

ibis - could you select the bits you'd like to have edited, and how? If at all possible, we could do with the original poster's permission to make the change, also...

It seems to me that replacing the company name with "(company)" would suffice. There's general information about the behaviour of some companies in that thread that I think should be preserved.

I'm quite happy to remove the name if I mentioned it in my own posts. Maybe PMing whoever mentioned it and asking if they wouldn't mind changing it would be better than a mod just editing things, or hoping that everyone will read this thread.

Well, though I appreciate the suggestions, that seems like a lot of bother (for everyone else) over something that's not very important. I'll just post something about how they've defended themselves to me and leave it at that. After all, it's just a favor they're asking, nothing I'm duty-bound to do.

I'm not sure that, once it's googled, anything can be done about it. If it's edited then clicking on the link may direct you to the edited post, not the original, but you can always check the Google cache, so a later disclaimer (or getting a mod to add the disclaimer to the posts in question) might be the only workable alternative)

Its also probably something to to think about when one is writing a post. One you click you have published whatever you have written - it has the potential to rattle around the internet forever- so perhaps thinking twice before hitting post could be considered a wise policy.

I thought that Barbelith would be a good place to ask around about the company - and I was right, people did research I didn't quite know how to do. I suspected they might find the thread, but I didn't think it was guaranteed nor that they'd know it was me, I guess I'd figured them for a bigger corp that wouldn't take the trouble. Admittedly, though, the Internets feel awfully small right now....
