Eeeh, I have a decent amount of free time at work and am very pissed about this issue...

Stop Sinclair.org is now asking for donations to run huge full-page ads in major newspapers across the country:

---- (received this mass email from them just now)

Dear Tony,

Thanks to you we have gathered more than 107,000 signatures for our StopSinclair petition in less than one week. On Friday, we brought our interim petition to the headquarters of Sinclair Broadcast Group in Hunt Valley, Maryland. Today, we are asking for your help to make sure that Sinclair doesn't get away with misleading swing states voters.

To counter this $9.9 million dollar illegal campaign contribution from Sinclair Broadcasting Group to the Bush/Cheney campaign we will run full-page newspaper ads on Thursday and Friday to put the spotlight back on the Bush/Cheney record.

We need to raise $65,000 in the next 36 hours to do this.

Donate Today: http://stopsinclair.kintera.org

It costs $8,900 to run a full-page ad in the Dayton Daily News. It costs $16,500 to run a full-page ad in the Columbus Dispatch. It will cost $65,000 to run full-page ads in all of the major daily papers in the six cities.

The bottom line is: we need to raise $65,000 in the next 36 hours. We need your help. Please contribute $50 today to defend John Kerry against Sinclair's slander.

Sinclair Axes Journalist Critical of Film

Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. said in a statement late Monday that it fired reporter Jon Leiberman and that "we are disappointed that Jon's political views caused him to violate company policy and speak to the press about company business."

In his initial remarks, published Monday by The (Baltimore) Sun, Leiberman called the Sinclair show "biased political propaganda, with clear intentions to sway this election."

Leiberman said he was fired Monday by Joseph DeFeo, Sinclair's vice president for news, and escorted out of the company's headquarters in Hunt Valley, Md.

"I was told I violated company policy by divulging information from a staff meeting" to The Sun, Leiberman said late Monday.

That's just fucking precious.

Hypocrisy in Action (taken from Time magazine) -

"Clearly, John Kerry has made his Vietnam service the foundation of his presidential run. This is an issue that is certainly topical."
-Mark Hyman, vice president of Sinclair Broadcasting Group's corporate relations, on why the company plans to air on its 62 stations a documentary attacking Kerry's antiwar activities of 30 years ago. Sinclair argues that the documentary is news coverage, which is exempt from federal air-time rules

"We do not believe such political statements should be disguised as news content."
-Sinclair Broadcast Group, in a company statement last April, explaining why it refused to air a special edition of ABC's Nightline that consisted of reading the names and showing pictures of each of the 523 US soldiers who had died in Iraq.

Sinclair's idea of a compromise? Shorten it and rename it:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., under widening scrutiny over plans to air a documentary about Sen. John Kerry's wartime activities 30 years ago, said on Tuesday it would not show the program in its entirety.

"Contrary to numerous inaccurate political and press accounts, the Sinclair stations will not be airing the documentary 'Stolen Honor' in its entirety," the Baltimore-based company said in a statement.

Sinclair said it would air a special news program on Friday called "A POW Story: Politics, Pressure and the Media" that would discuss the allegations surrounding Kerry's anti-Vietnam War activities.

Ooh, I just love how they're forced to back down a little bc they're losing money, and yet they still manage to make it look like the bad liberals were just lying or spouting their liberal consiracy theories. Who does that remind me of?....

(We never said there were weapons of mass destruction.)

(I never said I wasn't concerned about Osama Bin Laden.)

(There was no bulge on the President's back, you're just looking at too many crazy websites.)

Sounds more like Sinclair is planning on airing the most damning allegations from the documentary as part of an other documentary that appears to be purporting to be about the role of the media.

Hey, at least we've had some effect.

I love how they again say "despite the totally inaccurate assumptions of the media and various pissed-off people...". No, you're CHANGING YOUR GAME PLAN, dumbasses, it's not that we got it wrong the first time from your fucking press releases.

But that's no reason for us to let up on them! I'm not going to, at least.

They also didn't specify how long it would be instead of the 90 minute "news event" they'd planned.

A lengthy article in today's The New York Sun that I just read details the following:

- Sinclair has been deluged with e-mail and phone complaints, as have its advertisers. Also, two other groups have filed lawsuits against them (one, an individual on behalf of a labor union, and the other, a group called Media Matters for America, a watchdog organization). Their stock price has continued to drop dramatically. Advertisers and shareholders are pissed off.

- Sinclair said that, in addition to not airing the full documentary (although denying that they ever planned to air the full documentary), they were considering balancing the broadcast with some footage from the pro-Kerry Vietnam film "Going Upriver." Interesting development, esp. when you consider they already felt it was fair, balanced and newsworthy beforehand...

- Sinclair denies that the concessions are the result of political pressure but also acknowledges they care about their image and what their vieweres think. WHAT? ("Uh, we're not doing this in response to pressure but we also take public reaction into account." Total bullshit doubletalk to save face. Too late, Sinclair, you've already humiliated yourselves, you evil fucks.)

- One advertiser even accused Kerry followers of "censorship." HA!!

from DailyKos:

--------------------------------------------------------

>> In response to a lawsuit filed on behalf of MediaMatters today (because of your work in causing the stock price to fall, might I add) , Sinclair has issued a statement. The release contains the statement (emphasis mine):

Contrary to numerous inaccurate political and press accounts, the Sinclair stations will not be airing the documentary "Stolen Honor" in its entirety. At no time did Sinclair ever publicly announce that it intended to do so. In fact, since the controversy began, Sinclair's website has prominently displayed the following statement: "The program has not been videotaped and the exact format of this unscripted event has not been finalized. Characterizations regarding the content are premature and are based on ill-informed sources."

Really? Really? Never were going to show Stolen Honor? How about this listing in the Yahoo! television section, for our local Kansas City Sinclair affiliate:

[they link a graphic that reads STOLEN HONOR clearly from the TV listings]

Folks, we're close but we're not there yet. The move to a new Friday "documentary" is not nearly enough to let us yield, not yet. We have now nearly 100 advertiser pullouts, with more coming in daily.

Remember, it was the work of you that caused the stock price to fall. We can succeed in this. We're so close, and we will not give in. Keep fighting.

----------
Update 1: 1:18am - Actually, when I checked it out yesterday, the format said "Documentary". Now it is "Special/Other". Expect this to be removed entirely very soon, which is why I grabbed a screen shot.

>> Sinclair Stock Rebounds After Announcement

2 hours, 11 minutes ago Business - AP
By ALEX DOMINGUEZ, Associated Press Writer

BALTIMORE - Shares of Sinclair Broadcast Group rebounded sharply Wednesday after the company said it would only use parts of a documentary critical of John Kerry (news - web sites) in a program it first said would air on all of its stations.

Shares of the suburban Baltimore company rose around 14 percent, or 87 cents, to $7.13 on the NASDAQ stock exchange in early afternoon trading Wednesday. The shares had dropped more than 16 percent since plans for the show were first announced earlier this month.

-----

The article also mentions that U.S. Cellular, one of the largest if not the largest cellular phone providers in the country, was one of the advertisers that withdrew, saying it would not air commercials during or within 2 hours of the special, citing a 'perceived partisan' slant to the special. YEAH!

Huh, companies have now actually prepared real statements about this in response to the many emails they're getting:

---

Thank you for contacting General Mills.

Many consumers have written to share their views on this issue. Some have urged General Mills to use its influence as an advertiser to ensure that the media reports the news in an unbiased manner. Some have urged General Mills to continue advertising, and have threatened to withdraw support for our products if we alter our advertising plans. Passions run deep on both sides, particularly this close to an election.

Whenever possible, General Mills does strive to preview the programs on which our advertising appears. We do so to assure that we do not advertise on programs inconsistent with the family-oriented nature of our products. This works well with entertainment programs produced and available for advance screening, but pre-screening of news broadcasts is usually not possible.

Our view in this area is clear. We believe one of the fundamental elements of our society is the freedom of the press. Companies such as ours, in our view, should not attempt to influence, control or pre-empt the content of news through the leverage of advertising sponsorship. To do so would undermine that fundamental freedom.

From time to time, any one of us as viewers may consider a particular news story to be inaccurate or imbalanced. News organizations do err. Judgment is not always well applied. One major news organization recently acknowledged that errors were made in stories relating to the current presidential election. When such errors occur, certainly a price is paid in terms of reputation. But errors and questionable judgment are an acceptable price to pay, in our view, to assure the presence of a free and independent media in our society.

As viewers, each of us is free to make a choice. We can choose to patronize or not patronize programs with our viewership. We can choose to patronize or not patronize particular television stations, or even entire networks.

Similarly, advertisers may choose not to sponsor certain broadcasts, a particular network or specific publications because of their journalistic standards and judgment. But advertisers should not attempt to control or pre-empt news programming prior to broadcast or publication. That, in our view, would be inappropriate.

In this instance, as in the example cited earlier, passionate voices are calling on advertisers to insert themselves into the election by threatening to boycott those who remove or who do not remove their advertising.

We choose to stand with freedom of the press.

We welcome the views that you and others have shared with us. You may rest assured that we will remind the networks we sponsor that the integrity of their reporting reflects on the companies that advertise during their broadcasts.

Hopefully, you will understand our views – and the importance we place on a free press.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us and share your views.

Sincerely,

General Mills

Oh, that is so beautiful. The promise of capitalism--of spreading corporate ownership via the public trading of stock--is exactly this; a self-regulating system where abuses of corporate power are kept in check by the unwillingness of shareholders to be party to them, and by the ability of the shareholders to hold management accountable.

Admittedly, it's easy to forget that promise if all you really care about is making money: but when an abuse of power also proves to be bad for business--as this "Stolen Honor" malarkey will doubtless prove--then it's a slamdunk for the shareholders.

Fund managers like this guy are the perfect ones to carry the fight to Sinclair. They buy massive shares, they have a valid interest in seeing Sinclair do well financilly, but they can represent a constituency--government employees, in this case--that also have an interest in fairness and decency.

Too little too late, maybe, but here's hoping that more fund managers follow this guy's example.

Nothing's changed.

This from Boycott Sinclair, a sly little blog that's keeping tabs on this whole mess:

According to this letter sent to me by an SBG employee, Sinclair may use this weekend to play the new "documentary" several times. He agrees that the last press release was just a ploy.

* "If there is anyone at my affiliate station that supports this Stolen Honor/POW story decision, I can't find them."
* "There is no reason to believe that they have come to their senses. They said what everyone wanted to hear, and now they are going to do what they wanted to do in the first place."
* "SBG may use this weekend to get this program on the air more than once. The SBG press release mentions only what affiliates will be airing on Friday night. SBG may chose to air the program any number of times on any number of their affiliates after Friday.

The following article from Yahoo summarizes the points of the documentary, noting that the documentary is entirely one-sided and makes many irrational leaps in logic:

Their share prices have gone straight back up aswell, almost like nothing has happened, and they're still going ahead and showing something that will probably be just as fucked up as the original program. Stockchart

How they can recover that quickly is beyond me.

From the Yahoo story above -

No historians are questioned about the documentary's premise that Kerry, then a little-known activist, single-handedly extended the fighting in Vietnam by two years and delayed the return of American prisoners by telling Congress in 1971 that U.S. forces had committed human rights violations.

Are they kidding? The Vietnam War was Kerry's fault. 9/11 was Saddam's fault. Up is down. War is peace.

So this famous weekend has come and gone. Anyone see the actual broadcast? I haven't seen any online news articles about what they actually aired (although I haven't looked very hard, admittedly). I wonder if they showed it repeatedly throughout the weekend, as was rumored, or just the once Friday night...

Whatever the case may be, I've still got my eye on you, Sinclair. Nemesis and all us of here at Barbelith are watching you closely...

I saw some of it (about 10 min). I guess it was the part that came after the Stolen Honor section. They were featuring the movie Going Up River and actually showing some pro-Kerryish material. Then they interviewed George Bulter, the director, and asked him why he made the movie etc. They also asked him if he could understand why the POW's felt betrayed. There was some stock footage of Kerry shown, probably taken over the summer, where he was talking about his anti-war activities back in the day. I guess the rest of it was looking at Kerry and Bush's respective military service.

I will say that I would be very surprised if this was not thrown together at the last minute as a response to all the pressure. It was very choppy at parts and I don't know if it was live or what, but they cut to the wrong thing like twice and it seemed like they jumped to commercial right in the middle of this guy talking.
