Web Help- embedded tags in images?

Need a bit of web/html help. I've searched Google and can't find anything.

I was recently on a website that had photos on it. When right-clicked, a message popped up that said "Our images are protected through personalied embedded tags and will be tracked through the internet!"

Now.

I've never heard of this and frankly I think it's a lie concocted to keep people from stealing their stuff. So what do you think? Can it be done and if so, how does it work?

No, it's a load of bullshit people put in to give themselves some feeling of copyright security.

If you want an image, just go into the html source and link directly to it.

There are certain things you can do to embed information in an image, watermarking, steganography etc. There are ways of getting rid of this without much trouble if you're prepared to alter the original a little.

"Tracking it through the internet" is impossible though. If you grab an image and save it yourself rather than hotlinking, it can't phone home.

Triplet's: if he links to it directly from the page it *could* track the usage. It's not hard. All you do is construct a program that records the referer and then serves the image.

That's what I thought. Once I copy a pic and save it to my harddrive, it's untrackable. I knew they were making it up.

Cheers, guys.
