The garden

I got this little chunk of rhyme by Sir Walter Raleigh (which is interesting, since I live quite near Raleigh.)

Life

WHAT is our life? A play of passion,
Our mirth the music of division,

Heaven the judicious sharp spectator is,
That sits and marks still who doth act amiss.
Our graves that hide us from the setting sun
Are like drawn curtains when the play is done.

Miracles

WHY, who makes much of a miracle?
As to me, I know of nothing else but miracles,
Whether I walk the streets of Manhattan,
Or dart my sight over the roofs of houses toward the sky,
Or wade with naked feet along the beach just in the edge of the water,
Or stand under trees in the woods,
Or talk by day with anyone I love, or sleep in the bed at night with anyone I love,
Or sit at table at dinner with the rest,
Or look at strangers opposite me riding in the car,
Or watch honey bees busy around the hive of a summer forenoon,
Or animals feeding in the fields,
Or birds, or the wonderfulness of insects in the air,
Or the wonderfulness of the sundown, or of stars shining so quiet and bright,
Or the exquisite delicate thin curve of the new moon in spring;
These with the rest, one and all, are to me miracles,
The whole referring, yet each distinct and in its place.

To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle,
Every cubic inch of space is a miracle,
Every square yard of the surface of the earth is spread with the same,
Every foot of the interior swarms with the same.

To me the sea is a continual miracle,
The fishes that swim - the rocks - the motion of the waves - the ships with the men in them,

i had no idea it was national poetry day. i can't find the text online, but on the train this morning i read pound's canto 14, (and a couple others) - the no holds barred 'condoms stuffed with beetles' one. fucking blistering brilliant stuff.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree

Nobody's girl just stole two of my most favorite poems! Shenanigans! Prufrock is mine!

But on the quiz, I got Longfellow, so I don't feel so bad...

A sound mysteriously multiplied

Peruvian nose flutes? I thought nose flutes were Hawaiian. I guess it might not be exclusive.

Anyway, the quiz, stunningly enough, picked a poem I once printed out and taped up in my office.

It's one of the best ones there is.

Island where all becomes clear.

Solid ground beneath your feet.

The Tree of Understanding, dazzlingly straight and simple,
sprouts by the spring called Now I Get It.

The thicker the woods, the vaster the vista:
the Valley of Obviously.

Echoes stir unsummoned

I think the rubber catsuit factor got me this 'well hellooo' effort from Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford (1550-1604), who probably invented the Werther's Original:
