What do you think? Will you be watching this on BBC3 on Wednesday, live at 8pm? Dumbing down or raising the bar? Will this 'Educate, Entertain and Inform'?

Alas, I have no BBC3, so I won't be watching.

Opera is always silly, so it will have that going for it. It might even turn out to be less silly than many other libretti and operatic plots. Playing around with format and location might give it some edge that will grip the imagination of people, like me, who don't really "get" opera.

Who'd have thought Wagner would be so well received at Glastonbury? And I remember a very modernist tv opera the Beeb did a few years back about a vampire. I quite enjoyed that. I watched it anyway and wouldn't usually tune in to watch operas on tv.

I like the idea of doing it in public spaces. Not sure who the "selected members of the public" will be who will constitute the flashmob and what they will do when they mob in a flash. Lots of strapping young Brits in skimpy costumes, dawdling in railway stations, might entertain me as I commute.

And it all depends in the end on how effective the music is.
