I find that the magickal journal can be used as an invaluable tool for tunneling into and getting to grips with your own model of reality. Aside from just recording your actual experiments in it, you can use it to monitor your progress along your magickal path.
Disect your thought processes and emotional responses to life events and occult experiences and figure out what makes you tick. Pick apart the half examined thought complexes that make you what you are, then use the diary as a platform for re-programming yourself. etc..
Also, if you end up getting into areas of magick that can involve longterm and occasionally complicated relationships with multi-dimensional entities, the diary will serve as a record of where your at, how far you've come, and so on.
I'd say it's pretty invaluable for any long term work as you'll occasionally need to refer back to stuff you've done in the past to get a better angle on stuff happening in the now, check back on that tarot divination you did 6 months ago to see if it sheds any light on the tricky astral situation you've inadvertantly got yourself into. Look up exactly what the small print was on that demonic pact you decided to sign a year ago.
That sort of thing.
It also encourages you to examine your practices in a scientific manner and introduce the element of close criticism and scepticism to practices which can very easily dovetail into madness and paranoia if you walk down certain roads far enough. |
