who are the next big thing- who is worth checking out before the everyone and their dog gets hold of the album? The ones worth checking out for that legendary gig that everyone claims they were at..
I'm talking about bands just on the firing block- maybe signed maybe not. If you think theres a band that we're missing out on please share! I recently got back into new music in a big way after serveral years of indifference- There's a wealth of new music out there music is starting to look fresh again after serveral years of post britpop dullardsville..

To start the ball rolling here are a few i've recently got into:
Clor - they sound kind of like beck meets prince meets the rapture meets pavement but electro-ish.
I heard there ep the other day and I think its bloody great 3 of the tracks are on the website and are fab..
I've still not seen them but there touring with The Departure who kind of sound like the joy division meets Franz Ferdinand - I think the music press are already barking about them but it could be worth checking out- at the ica in October.
Havana Guns dreadful name but sound ace- a bit like Blondie meets Belle and sebastion and the strokes- very cool- the track she always goes down - which is in the website is definitly a corker.
On an insane japenese garage rock tip are Comanechi they had a limited single release through Loose lips sink ships and are barking mad but well worth watching.

let us know your thoughts- i think all the sites have mp3's (?!) and put some more up share the knowledge.
enjoy...

Magyar Posse like Godspeed x Sigur Ros

The Go! Team will go far. The first album I have bought for years on the strength of liking it on the shop's PA. My god, this thing fucking ROCKS! It sounds like they were all leaning forwards grinning manically when they made it. So much energy and shouty verve. They must become big, and then the world will have cheesy smiles plastered across their faces.

Yes, The Go! Team. Yes. I hope to be, like, totally blown away by then at The Spitz next week...

The Go! Team have made at least one GREAT song (Junior kickstart), but they were boring live when I saw them.

I'd vote for Arcade fire. Or Bloc Party.

Keep an eye out for Big Joan (Bristol based), King Alexander (Cardiff based) and Usagi (London based, I think). They're all fabulous female fronted punk or rock bands, and all well worth catching live if you can.

C'mon people I'm bumping this thread cos I'm still listening to the CLOR ep- its fucking ace! I don't think 4 tracks have held my attention for repeated listening for a long time.

Rizla / anybody seen them yet?
I've still not although I hear the're really rather wonderful. I'm still trying to decide what they sound like- Pavement meets prince in a lo fi way? 3 of the tracks on the welcome music lovers cd are on their website (link above) Go check it out if it sounds like your thing...
anybody else got into the Clor thing yet? Am i on my own?

I know they're signed to Parlaphone and people have high hopes for them- but as the ep was limited to 1000 copies you may be too late!? I know nothing more about them as their website is pretty mysterious filled with strange artwork like this...

I expect Brighton four-piece The Charlottefield to do good things. Ace, angular shouty stuff with the best drummer since Animal. Beg, steal or borrow there extremely ltd 7 inch 'loudmouth/firewood', or check 'em live.

I think you've been duped McGyver- Charlottefield are not a new band merely Yeovil based C86 indie oldies The Chesterf!elds under a new name.

I think they're trying for an Alarm/Poppyfields lame ass revival in the vague hope that they can enter the charts- something i don't think they ever managed in their jingle jangle heyday not even the with the legendary track- last train to Yeovil...

so being the kind of wanker I am i shall ignore their attempts to play punk rock with kids (just kids fer christsakes!) miming Milli Vanilli style over badly recorded backing tracks.

Think back to your last gig- are you sure they were always in synch- you can 'mime' feedback too- with the correct training...

However on the up side if you have spent money on them you may have the right to sue... good luck

'The Chesterfields never played the Womad Festival. The photos you have are from the Evercreech for Africa Festival'

the singer from the chesterfields would often drink in a pub down the road and couldnt drink more than 2 pints before passing out. until he was hit by a car last year. i still have his copy of "new wave hits from '77"
is it mine now?

13:35 / 11.11.04
how many pints can he drink now that he has been hit by a car?

Shit i feel really guilty and sad now cos I used to know Dave quite well in the early 90's..

Hadn't seen him for years but did lots of gigs with his post chesterfields band Furnt circa 91- 95... last time i spoke he was working on the soundtrack to spleen stuff with Rob Ellis- a very very frightening record....

i'm going slope off now with my head hung low...

Yeah whatever. So, ANYWAY, they are an actual band and people should actually go and see them. Now Copey, on with your indie-schmindie hopefuls list...

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
16:13 / 16.11.04
You mean "Davy Chesterfield"/Goldsworthy?

Fuck, I was good mates with his brother Tim (who last I heard was doing stuff with I think it was U.N.K.L.E.) when I was at school in Yeovil... and I'm pretty sure the same Rob Ellis was at my A-level college. Had an enormous quiff at the time, iirc.

Anyway...

If Panic DHH don't make it big (at least on the industrial scene) this year I'll eat Al Jourgensen's hat. A stonking DHR album and a blistering live set have definitely made them one of my fave up-and-coming thingies.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

(actually, no. Not that Rob Ellis, I've just realised. I was confusing two different people)

yup twas that davy goldsworthy stoaty- ar heady west country days!
The Rob Ellis in question drums for PJ Harvey on and off and was an on off member of Laika if that helps...

***threadrot**
spleen was actually pretty good -not really new music (sountrack to LP was about '96 i believe) but worth a mention on the obscur front- 2 tracks have Polly Harvey singing, Terry Edwards from Gallon Drunk/ Tindersticks/ Scapegoats plays sax, John Parish also in PJ Harvey for a bit and full time Yeovil Legend now producer doing Eels, sparklehorse and stuff, and then Dave goldsworthy, weird duo Pooka and Tim Farthing - also a PJ harvey member but also once the singer of Gutless- the west countrys finest that never happened.... absolutely a brutal screeching record- I don't know if i ever managed to get through the whole thing in one sitting- but definitely worth a mention...

Back to the new bands...

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

(sorry, but continuing threadrot) John Parish played drums on and produced the demo by my amazingly shite student goth band. The drums and production were good, though. His mum was our deputy headmistress.(/end Yeovil malarkey)

Hatebeak absolutely have to break through this year. It'd be unfair otherwise.

Sadly, I imagine a lot less good indie bands WILL get the exposure they deserve, what with Peely being dead an' all.

Regrettable Juvenilia

Wait... You were good friends with Tim Goldsworthy? As in, now one half of the DFA, godlike production team beloved by hipsters?

haus of fraser
07:50 / 17.11.04
yes that Tim Goldsworthy- brother Dave was in the Chesterfields...

who'd have thought Yeovil had such a rich musical history,

threadrot ends please...

Not sure if they are new, but they are new to me, and I really like them (which is saying something as I've been on an anti-nova music thing for a while, heading back to the safety of Motown) "TV on the Radio".

Soho Dolls. Like Blondie and the Human League being mugged by Girlschool down a dark alley.

Lovely.
