What Happens On October 9?

There is a restaurant I pass on my way to and from work each day. They have had a sign up for at least a week, on which they have been counting down the days till October 9th. This morning it said, "17 DAYS TILL OCTOBER 9TH!"

There is no further explanation to be had, on that sign or any other. I am wondering why they are so very excited about October 9th, because as far as I know it should be a perfectly ordinary Saturday. It's my Unbirthday, but beyond that I haven't a clue. It's bugging me.

Perhaps the illustrious Barbelith community might assist by providing predictions, suggestions or random brain droppings about what will/might/could/should happen on this most mysterious and anticipated date of October 9th.

They used to sell this poster in college bookstores called "365 Reasons to Party," with a holiday/event every year. Of course, now I can't find it.

Got it. Oct. 9th is 25 days before election day, so that's probably the deadline to register to vote. Or the restaurant owner's birthday.

Both definite, if mundane, possibilities...

I should mention that it's also quite likely to be a wind-up, as this place is a bit quirky. The sign they had up before this one, if I recall correctly, said "OWL FRIED RICE". They have also advertised their queso as being better than Viagra.

So I'm kind of expecting they'll have something amusing to say come October 9th, like "Happy Compulsive Sign-Readers' Day!" It's fun to wonder about.

I might not know about October 9th but If you want to know 'What Will Happen on October 12th' you'd be best servered picking up an anthology of Dino Buzzati short stories - you'll be glad you did...

The Daily Bleed has even more to say. I think it's John Lennon's birthday, so that colors everything they put up. It's also the birthday of Peter Tosh and Jackson Browne, and the death-day of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Jacques Brel.

Among their (many) entries for this day:

-- Leif Erikson reaches Vinland (perhaps New England). http://www.mnc.net/norway/Leif.htm

1776 -- San Francisco de Assisi mission started at present site of San Francisco, California. Probably corner of Haight-Ashbury.

1916 -- Babe Ruth pitches & wins longest World Series baseball game (14 innings) 2-1.

1936 -- US: During a lettuce strike in Salinas, Ca, red flags appeared around town, specifically at intersections & on power poles. Fearing communists, the local authorities took down the flags, only to discover later that they were "part of a traffic check being made by the state highway division."

1967 -- Bolivia: Revolutionist Ernesto "Che" Guevara captured & summarily executed, age 39, in the Bolivian highlands (by troops trained in US). Argentine doctor, who rejected both capitalism & orthodox communism.

1969 -- Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young opened at Fillmore West, San Francisco.

It's also the day James Watts resigned during the Reagan years.

Arrgh. I think I figured it out.

October 9th is the day the University of Texas plays football against Oklahoma Univerity. (The restaurant is right next to UT.)

I'm annoyed. I much prefer Magic Lantern Day. In fact, I think I will celebrate that.
