I'm sure a lot of you were on the net before we used mouses and all that, (I personally started off as a troll who got kicked off of MUD'S and message boards worldwide) but what about when the internet was just starting to explode with massive amounts of creative content? Do you guys remember the silly trends? The suicidal teenage girl domain scene, the E/N scene... stuff like that?

Do you remember:

-Ate My Balls parodies
-AOL sucks sites
-Stick Figure Death Theater
-Anti-social.com

etc. etc. etc.

What is your favorite memory of internet culture? Do you ever refuse to surf the net because the scene sux now?

The suicidal teenage girl domain scene

Kinda, I think, though I didn't really realize it was a scene (I stumbled into swan.songs.net in a quest for Labyrinth fanfiction) and I got into it really late because I didn't have a home computer that could get onto the internet till the late 90s. But I was always really intrigued by it.

on a related note, if you look at the Francesca Lia Block LJ community, you will note that every single person that posts there lists the music they are listening to as Tori Amos. (Well, okay. But seriously about 99% or something.)

My most vivid memory of the internet is only from last year.... yeah not old skool but what are you gonna do?

anyway, remember that kid (he was 16/17) who over-dosed on all these chemicals (which he had prescriptions for) and died LIVE on the internet through a webcam?

creepy...

I love snuffling through old pre-internet bulletin-board textfiles. I wish I'd had the money and knowhow to be a part of that scene, all Church of Subgenius and William S. Burroughs and Samantha Fox ASKEY pron.

I remember back in 1995, I got word of a guy who was looking for short stories for "a new project." I phoned him up. Hesitantly, he asked me if I'd ever heard of the World Wide Web.

Ahh, green remembered hills ect ect.

I used to read Suck.com every day from 1997-2000, and miss it.... although it's all still online, reading 4 year old articles and comics just isn't as fun...

www.nocturna.net - the mature, gorgeous version of the sucidal teenage girl domain. And now she's liberated herself, split on a train to somewhere, and not even the photoshop brushes are still there...
