Annie - "Anniemal"

Album of 2004 without question. Well, this or Dizzee anyhow.

Smart, tuneful, fun and very Euro.

Thoughts?

Thoughts:

Is the album out (in the shops) in the UK already? I hope so, I like 'Heartbeat' a lot.

I feel like I have a lot to say about Annie (and the whole "pop on purpose" thing as discussed on ILM) but should probably hear some more tracks first...

I fear Barbelith won't give Annie the love she deserves.

is this the 'don't mix chocolate with chewing gum' girl? only seen it on telly, but dead catchy. are there backing dancers or are they kind of the girls in the band? either way, previously thought to be shaz-clones but if in fact they're euro-bots then that's okay.

The lyric is "oh no, you've got it all wrong / you think you're chocolate when you're chewing gum."

I really love the Anniemal album, it's definitely a great record. It's not totally solid, but it's got at least eight songs which are absolutely stunning.

I have been kindly donated a copy of Anniemal.

The first half of the album at least (and that's the half that counts with pop albums) is fantastic. 'Chewing Gum' is obviously the great lost number 1 single of 2004 (it went in at #25), but 'Me Plus One' is even better and if that one gets released and doesn't make the top 10, I'll be gutted. She might want to wait until spring though, 'cos that's the season it sounds like. How lovely are those "ba-ba-ba"s?

The obvious comparisons that have been made do hold up (Kylie, etc), but what a lot of Annie's stuff really reminds me of is Saint Etienne, back when they were really exciting. I get the same sense of delight from Annie as I did when I first heard 'You're In A Bad Way'.

She's been through a rough patch: boyf died of a heart disorder at 23.

And do you hear her complaining? No! A lesson for us all, there, I believe.

The album's out a week today in the UK.

I don't own a tv or radio, therefore I am severely out of touch with whatever's happening in pop music.

'Chewing Gum' - recently seen on a friends screen - makes me want to change that.

Fantastic song.

I was at a party this weekend, and the DJ played "Chewing Gum" three times in three hours. Two of the three times, it was followed up by Fox's "S-s-single Bed." Pretty fucking awesome party, let me tell ya.

I've just watched the Chewing Gum video, a couple of times actually, and she seems like a bubbly, vivacious and interesting person. And while on the one hand, I couldn't the volume to work on the link, on the other, that didn't really seem to affect my enjoyment, particularly.

So as the end of the year approaches and the insidious urge to make lists and tallies of the year's music kicks in, I think it's far too D-I-F-F-I-C-U-L-T (not to mention early) to say what the best album of 2004 has been...

...But is there any competition for best single of the year?

Oh no. Oh no. You've got it all wrong.

Naah, the Knife has it, I'm afraid...

Scandinavia ruling the airwaves either way though.

Are you talking about 'Heartbeats' (not to be confused with Annie's 'Heartbeat')? Did that actually come out as a single this year? That was definitely one of the best things I heard for the first time in 2003 (before I lost my edge).

Annie's 'Heartbeat' was just on the radio in the internet cafe I'm in. It's also former-anti-pop-bores Pitchfork's single of 2004.

Time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade.

It's true, it came out in Europe (and Fluxblog) in '03, but got its UK release, with Rex the Dog mix only a couple of months ago.

Plus it was this year not last year that we were all listening to it constantly, right?

by the way, weird isn't it the way that "Greatest Hit" was first out in like 2000 but as a club record. Used to get big play by Alkan and all them. Interesting that she didn't follow the success of that stylistically but went P.O.P. instead, huh?

Here's a wonderfully cheesy track by Fredrik Saroea featuring Annie. It's not as good as her solo stuff, but the juxtaposition of Annie and this over the top lounge singer is great, definitely worth the download.
