They were one of my "first bands" too, and I really do like the old stuff. Cliff Burton (and to a lesser extent, Jason Newsted) is the reason I started playing bass. I bought everything they put out pre-Black Album, seen them live twice, and had two different t-shirts for every day of the week...I lived Metallica, and as cliche as it sounds, like many people, thier music helped me through some rough times.
I even defended them when they did Load. Although it didnt totally vibe with me, who was I to say how these guys should grow as artists? Sadly though, I had to admit that the music took a nasty spiral downward. I've heard some tracks off the new album, and seriously, at points it's so bad it's unlistenable! I think maybe as a musician I'm insulted because I know they're all really talented players, but they're just churning out utter crap.
And ever since they went to shit, I haven't put on a Metallica album for even a minute...I don't know why, but it's like thier current work negates thier previous work, because you finally find out that they weren't "building up" to anything, they just ended up shite.
I see this and I often wonder how artists who died at a young age would have turned out. Would people still think Kurt Cobain was a legend if grunge would have died the same way that that rap-metal phase did, or would he be seen as a Durst? What about Hendrix, Jim Morrison, et al.? |
