Since I posted the story of my little kitten Tomato in the Black and Orange Update? thread, several people (on board and off) have told me that they also have a ghost kitten. So, I'm wondering if this might actually be more common than I would have thought.

To repeat the highlights of Tomato's story: our cat Jenni Wren had kittens a while back. Two of them were plain grey, one grey with white socks, and one double-pawed albino. Needless to say, the little albino caught my attention right away. Unfortunately, she and one of her brothers were very small and week, and their mother rejected them. We did our best to hand-rear them, but they didn't survive the day (and my little albino, already named "Tomato" by my son - another story - passed away in my hand).

The moment Tomato was born, literally, I felt a shiver of something. Recognition, something. But I knew, from her first breath, that she was here to be a Familiar of sorts - or an "animal ally," to be a little less Magus imperialis about it. When it became clear that she wasn't going to survive (though our efforts continued unabated, even to attempted resuscitation), I knew (not "thought about" or "came up with" or even "decided") that I needed to take steps to allow her to remain with the family after her body's death.

After she died, I lit up the althaea incense and candles (and assorted whatnot) and invited her to stay with us, if she wished (along with my promise that if she ever wished to move on she was not bound). Starting that night, and (nearly) every night thereafter, I have left her a plate of milk and a burning myrrh incent on our stovetop (our "hearth" equivalent). The arrangement as it stands is that we will continue to feed and care for her, and she will perform her catly duties on the spectral level - guarding the house and its occupants from unwelcome spiritual intruders and probing psychic presences, and also warning us in the event of a dangerous emergency. She has permission to communicate with me through dreams, whenever she wishes, with the caveat that I can close that door if necessary.

Since she has come to live with us, the general "atmosphere" in the house has been noticeably "lighter" than before - it used to carry an intermittently oppressive feel, necessitating regular cleansings in the hoodoo style (which I still do, but the dust ain't as thick, if you know what I mean). Objectively, I have no way of determining for sure if it has anything to do with my dear sweet kitten patrolling the borders, but it certainly feels that way.

So, enough about us. How about you? You and your ghost cat, that is. Tell us stories. Half-seen presences? Dream visits from beloved felines? Story time. *sits down to listen*

*prrrrrrrr*

Okay, so how does an albino cat end up getting named Tomato? I love it, I just want to know the story...

Half-seen presences?

Purrhaps this applies...

Some of you may have seen my Convo thread recently about my adopted stray cat, Inca, who was hit by a car a couple of weeks ago. When I buried her I told her she could either move on or hang around, as she wished (she was an older cat, so best that she should at least have the option to go elsewhere). I've been putting a little food out for her at the gravesite each night - whatever falls out of the indoor cats' dish becomes her portion.

I get the feeling she may have decided to stay. My husband and I have both caught several peripheral glimpses of a cat, in and around the house, where none actually seems to be. Nothing more dramatic than that; it's just a general sense of a tentative presence. Come to think of it, though, I've also noticed that I'm sleeping better lately, and some of my usual haze of fear and paranoia seems to be clearing away...

I've been wondering about the possibility of formally enlisting her assistance as a spirit guide, and I have a half-concocted ritual in mind for the fall equinox involving that...

So, not a kitten, but.

Sekhmet: thanks for sharing. I like the point of using the food that falls from the living cats' bowl: it has the scent of older tradition (wherein food that spills is claimed by the spirits - don't ask me where I read it, but it's familiar).

[aside] My wife was showing our (pre-verbal) baby the kittens and asked him what he would like to name his kitten (we had decided to keep the albino and try to find homes for the others), and he picked up the little plastic tomato from his play-food basket and waved it triumphantly at his mommy. So, Tomato. (Meanwhile, we ended up keeping both living kittens, for a total of four corporeal cats in the house.) [/aside]

i'm just a novice...
Question:
So spectral animals, who've bonded with you physically in real life can become familiars/ guardian spirits?
& why would/how could the spirits of simple housepets keep malevolent entities at bay?
Just want to know.
i wonder if my pet hamster whom i've accidentally killed at age 8 through an overdose of lettuce is still around...
Naah.. i don't think i sense any rodent spirits in my life. O_o

The only cat I have around is thankfully alive and well. I checked out the spilt food-spirit thing, but this was all I could find:

In many parts of Europe the spilling of milk was actually thought to be good luck as it provided food for the good fairies that scurried about on the ground. Link

I'm not sure whether cats can/do hang around as familiar spirits, but there's no doubt in my mind that (if they do) they'd be ace at keeping malevolent entities at bay. Anyone who thinks otherwise has obviously never witnessed a precious little ball of fur eviscerate another animal Ichi the Killer-style. Yikes. As with many humans, though, a cat's capacity for carnage is often proportionate to its cuteness and general cuddlability.

My Kitten was one I had adopted but died when she was only a couple of months old. A while after (almost a year, I think) I had a vision while meditating of my kitten so I asked her to help me and she took up residence in my chest (This was all felt and seen "over-layed" on reality, the way I always "see" things like this).

She's helped heal one friend (well, his toe, anyway!) and totally failed to heal another! I'll admit I haven't had much contact with her lately. Must see to that...
My current living situation doesn't allow for physical offerings (my boyfrind thinks I'm weird enough as it is!) but I might try seomthing.

We had a young black cat about a year old. He managed to dash out the door one afternoon, and we were unable to find him. He did come back the next night, but he had been critically injured. We tried to make him as comfortable as we could until we could get the money organized to take him to the vet. Unfortunately he died that night. As a memorial, we put a small statue of a winged black cat on our fireplace mantle. Apparently, he decided to stay around. Everyone in the house occasionally sees him out of the corner of our eye. I thought I saw him trotting across the living room ceiling last week. Our 4 live cats will frequently sit on tables and stare at an unseen moving object on the ceiling as well.
