Hi folks.

I'm working at the Science Museum and we need the opinions/answers of real people just like you for a debate we're organising at the Dana Centre (the adult-only wing of the Sci Mus). It'll only take a minute or two to complete (I suggest cutting and pasting the questions and deleting Y or N as appropriate. It's anonymous obviously.

If anyone fancies coming to the Dana Centre to join the debate, btw, the website is here. It's quite a cool place generally cos there's free internet access all day (10-6, later on event nights) and until the end of September you can get free beer and bar snacks there if you bring a leaflet with a voucher in it. And they're all over the building, including in the cafe. They WANT you to come and get free stuff, I tell ya!

Do you know how you catch it? No - other than a vague idea that you need to have your immune system weakened or a big fuck off hole in you first.

How easy do you think it is to catch? not very - based on I don't know what. Maybe the lack of an influenza style epidemic.

Do you know how to avoid catching it? No - stop reading the Daily Mail?

Does the idea of MSRA make you nervous about going to hospital? No - the idea of going to hospital makes me nervous about going to hospital.

Have you ever asked a doctor or nurse to wash their hands before treating you? No - I tend to believe that a) they know more about this shit than I do and b) they are more likely to stick pointy things in my plentiful flesh if I start impuning their personal hygiene.

Do you think you would? No - see above.

By the way, they have an adult-only section in the museum? What exactly have they got in there? Particularly racy diodes? An interactive display on industrial accidents? Genetically modified wheat that can swear in five languages? Or is it full of really hard sums?

fluffeemunk - yeah, it's more of a "grown-up" than an "adult" (as in adult entertainment, adult content) kinda place - it's where they have the stuff too icky or sexy or highfalutin to explain (away) to kids. Although they did have a night of "object handling" with Victorian sex aids a few months ago. Made the Daily Mail, natch.

There's also evening discussions about antidepressants, the paranormal (including a 19th-century-style seance*) and cravings this month.

*I am so there. I wanted them to call it a Science Seance but no dice.

Additional comments : this actualy really did kill my dad - he had it for weeks before we were asked to wash our hands, (it was only after i asked why the antibiotics weren't healing his pneumonia that we found out) after visiting him and touching ward doors, (none of us knew about it then or we would have done of our own volition).

Even after that, open wards, shitty aprons that dont cover half of you, leaflets that I understand 'cos I'm reasonably smart and hit the net and look this stuff up, but my 62 year old mum cant really get her head around dont help either.

Sort of. When I worked in hospital I chatted to a few of the patients from the cardiac ward who had contracted it. The ward was closed twice for MRSA infections in the year I was working there. The cause? According to a patient it was an irresponsible surgeon who arrogantly refused to admit fault.

Do you know how you catch it? Yes, I think so. Getting exposed to it is a good start. A compromised immune system will also help.

How easy do you think it is to catch? Depends if you're in hospital or not. If inside, quite easy, if outside, not so easy.

Do you know how to avoid catching it? No. Apart from avoiding hospitals.
