Odd ball question of the day, comrades. Tell me about the number "314". I know it's referenced in Buffy as Room 314, a sort of government run version of Frankenstein's lab. However, I've heard it before, and it's bothering me. And Whedon is just enough of a geek to be referencing something bigger than all that. All I can find that's any good on the internet is references to the U.S. Special Virus Operation back in he 70's, National Security Defense Memorandum 314. So, tell me all about this number. Is there any magical significance to it? Is it a black opps military thing, like the Majestic 12? Am I just nuts? (yes) Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

The immediate thing that came to mind was PI

isn't that 3.14 etc?

I know this doesn't help but PI and the whole field of mathematics was once considered esoteric and mysterious

Maybe this contributed to the prevailence of this number in occult texts etc?

Yeah it's PI : 3.14 or 3.142 or to how ever many decimal places because it's supposed to just go on forever. Apart from that Buffy reference i've seen it in the actual film PI, where some Scientist type guy became obsessed with it and had Kabbalists tracking him down believing it was the hidden number of God. Really wierd film which i thought was pretty mind-bending. It's here, where the plot outline says 'Dark, hyperkinetic movie about a paranoid mathematician searching for a key number which will unlock the universal patterns found in nature.' The Wachowski's also made it a part of The Matrix Reloaded, with Neo having 314 seconds to get to the Source before the connection was lost.

I'm sure that if you check out the occult references you'll find quite a bit.

In some systems of Gematria, 314 is the number of the angel Metatron, and two names of God - Shaddai, and Shakai - the latter associated with Yesod. Try looking for an online edn of Mathers' "The Kabbalah Unveiled" for more info.

Ah... what do you mean, "22/7"?

22/7 is roughly PI.

Actually, PI is something else. I think

RiemanSum(1/x) where x starts at one an increases by two each iteration.

I'm not that sure, though.

You really must try and make English your primary method of communication...I'm sure all that makes fine sense to you but some of us are mere mathematical retards who had to give up, tail between our legs halfway through Godel, Escher, Bach...could you provide a translation?

If you're talking to me, I assume you want to know what a Rieman sum is. I myself am not sure I'm using the right terminology. In this case, all I'm saying is that to get Pi you add 1/1 + 1/3 + 1/5 + 1/7 + ... ad infinitum, just keep adding two to the denominator (lower number).

22/7 is indeed the rough equation for PI. Just as Hebrew has 22 letters to it [as well as the major arcana] and the sacredness of 7~ which is just to exhausting to cover here.

Food for thought:

360/1=360
360/2=180
360/3=120
360/4=90
360/5=72
360/6=60
360/7= 51.428571428571428571428571
360/8= 45
360/9= 40

Curse you 7 day week!

or 22 divided by 7.

Its not exactly pi, but in early high school if your calculator didn't have a pi button....
