This year the Disasters Emergency Commision marks its 40th anniversary. Working with aid agencies and charities like the Red Cross, Oxfam and Tear Fund it launches and co-ordinates the UK’s National Appeal in response to major overseas disasters.
As one of the events marking this anniversary the DEC is showing the work of photojournalist and war photographer Tom Stoddart. The exhibition, entitled iWitness is currently on display outside the GLA offices beside Tower bridge in London.
It is difficult for me to encapsulate the exhibition in words when so much is said in the pictures. It contains images from Sarajevo, Sudan, Gujurat amongst some of the disasters that the Tom Stoddart has covered. Tom Stoddart is a talented photographer and very much a leading light in his field. On viewing his work you will see that all of his subjects are treated with dignity and respect. Even in portraying their most desperate and needy moments it is evident that the photographer conveys upon them a due attention to detail and an equality of relationship.
The work is also harsh in nature. In constructing the exhibition the directors have created a display that examines the pain and suffering beyond our daily life and lays the blame squarely at the foot of humanity. Dispite what you may be confronted with I would urge all of you to take the time to visit this exhibition. I would also urge you to take a moment to be completely fucking ashamed for everything you have ever taken for granted although I appreciate that this is very much a matter of personal choice and conscience. |
