Hey there book reading type peoples! I've finished reading Rucker's Spaceland, which is a tribute to Edwin A Abbott's Flatland. It was great fun! Fast paced, full of craziness in the way only Rucker can write it.

Rucker, who is a mathematician, computer scientist, and professor, writes great sci-fi that comes straight outta' the imaginative side of his proffesions. You get wacked out stories that have their basis in mathematical and scientific knowledge.

Other fiction by Rucker that I've read include: the whole Ware series (Software, Wetware, Freeware, and Realware), The Hacker and the Ants, White Light, Spacetime Donuts, and Master of Space and Time. I have never been disappointed by a Rucker book. They are always fun, full of characters with personality, and they read like a breeze.

He also writes some non-fiction, of which I've read The Fourth Dimension, and Infinity and the Mind. These are great in their ability to give the reader and accessible account of what are otherwise quite abstract and complicated notions.

If you like sci-fi, I highly recommend Rucker. Or if you read Rucker and want to talk about him and his works, then have at it!

I've only read Software (which I loved- especially a scene in which, without giving too much away, major plot-related stuff is going down while all the characters are inhaling helium from a busted coolant system), but I have White Light (never got round to reading it yet).

That scene sounds vaguely familiar. My memory for these sorts of things coupled with the fact that I read Software about ten years ago is making it pretty hazy.

The entire Ware series kicks ass. The later adventures feature characters that are the offspring of previous characters. And Rudy has a flare for neat-o tech (did you meet any of the mouldies in that one? Or they might feature in Wetware).

I highly recommend that you read White Light as soon as possible. No, even sooner. It is one of Rucker's more mystical novels: astral projection, mystical journey, infinity, infinities, enlightenment, mathematics, and so on. Good, good stuff.

I read the 'ware books years ago (I remember loving them, though my memory of why is somewhat hazy at this point), and came across Spaceland at the library just recently. Spaceland was a whole lot of fun; I immediately resolved to hunt down more Rucker books, but quickly forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder.
