What to do with a fat cat

I have two cats. They're both about two years old. One is long and thin. The other is stumpy and fat. He wasn't fat at first, but in the last few year, gradually, he's bloated to Hitchcockian proportions.

I took the fat one to the vet recently. He suggested diet food, plus to get one of those little laser-beam projectors that make beams of light shoot around the room. Apparently cats love to chase it and it's a form of exercise.

The front side of him ain't bad, it's the back side: When he sits on his haunches he looks like a fat, furry purring pear. He's fairly active (though usually only if there's a moth around), and he can still run around and jump to high surfaces, but I still would like him to lose some weight. Oddly enough he doesn't even eat all that much.

Anyone else here had problems with cat obesity and ideas on how to help them lose weight? (besides the vet's suggestions listed above?) Thanks.

im not sure what the problem could be. do you feed the cats at the same time? this could be reason cos after cat no.1 has finished (the skinny one) cat no.2 (the fat one) will proberly eat cat no.1's left overs. explaining the mystery. ..... or!! the cat is born to be chubby like most people nowadays. cant blame them. all they do is lay, sleep and eat.

Yeah, both cats are fed at once. We feed the chubby one diet food and the skinny one normal food. Of course sometimes the chubby one will wait till the other leaves then sneak over and eat his food instead of the diet stuff. Oddly enough the thin one eats way more then the fat one.

*groan*

Could the cat just naturally be a fat bastard? You know that 'glandular' thing fatties use as an excuse, but actually real?

You could try starving him. No food, just water. Well, maybe a little food with a couple of vitapills loaded in. But, if he wants to eat he'll have to go outside and catch his own meal. Activity and decent nutrition.
