DVD burning question?

Hi,

I've got another one of those PC/Techy type questions. I got a new DVD player at the weekend and I was wondering if anyone could advise of watching custom made DVDs - I've tried a few burnt DVD's and some of them seem to work and some don't - for example Lost in Translation works which is in Mpg format but others in avi don't work - which seems straight forward enough convert the avi files to mpg2 (which seems to take forever) but it's not quite as simple as that as some AVI discs seem to work, Angel for example works….

So can someone clear this up for me? What formats will work and which wont?

And does anyone know if there is a quicker way of converting as the software I've got gives an estimated time of about 7 hours per movie….

I don't know much about it myself, but CloneDVD is great -it takes 2 or 3 hours to burn a dvd and they work fine. Looks pretty expensive, though, and I'm sure there's a cheaper if more complicated way of doing the same thing...

(Sorry, I just had another look at their site and they don't actually say anything about downloaded movies. It might be doable but the site's being all coy about the copyright thing so it's difficult to tell... apologies if I just told you a load of crap, I'm sure there's loads of people here who really do know what they're on about!)

You might like to try these forums, which are a pretty comprehensive respository for all things involving DVD burning. If you can't find any threads which help, and can be bothered, starting your own thread here will almost certainly get you what you need.

Just done a little searching for you. Your best best is to convert your files to SVCD format, which should play on any ordinary DVD player.

This forum contains the threads related to said conversion, whilst this thread contains a step by step guide to the conversion.

Step by Step looks good, I'll have a proper read when I get home. It was just a little strange being that some avis worked and some didn't I guess it's all in the encoding. Things is the DVD player supports mpegs so I thought that would be the way forward... I'll try a SVCD tonight.

It means I'll be able to watch Electric Dreams in the comfort of the living room

Personally, I just clone DVD's that I rent onto my hard drive and burn them.
I'm dull like that.

Well, yes, it is of course infinitely easier to just rent the required DVD then burn a copy. Since commercial DVDs are pressed rather than burnt they almost always exceed the 4.7Gb capacity of DVD-Rs, so I recommend the AnyDVD / DVD Shrink method.

Er, well as a Linux user I use a bit of cheesewire and a sarong to copy DVDs...

No seriously there's a really cute program called k3b that does it for me and even better (or at least 3x as geeky) is the idea of self booting movie cds/dvds.
