X-statix 26

So, we finally reach the end of the run of the most ideosyncratic X-titles Marvel has produced.

Out with a bang (or several bangs) rather than a whimper. And a great Butch and Sundance moment between Guy and Tike.

So what did you guys think about the last issue of the X-statix?

hang on, so when i get to the shop tomorrow morning i've got we3, promethea, ast xmen, and xstatix to get?!?!?!?

sometimes things are just great you know? i hope doop doesn't buy it, he should definitely be among the revamped avengers, as he's the only xstatik to have his own action figure.

Sad to see this go in many ways, but I think the title had lost it's spark a while ago (excepting all time classic Tony Stark Guy Smith naked wrestling issue). Compare some of the later stories with Edie or Tike's back story, or the one about that horrid mutant boy and it's clear Milligan had lost some of his enthusiasm. However: X-Statix is definitely the weirdest ongoing Marvel comic perhaps ever, and at it's best it was pretty unbeatable.

Liked the end - Milligan managed to have pathos and humour, without it being forced

Sad that Doop and Miles were so casually offed. I wonder what plans Milligan really had for the little green fucker? 'Member thta little back story drawn by Darwyn Cooke? Dark.
Loved the final shot of the empty cinema - weird and quite chilling. Plus it kind of highlighted the post-modern angle of the title. All in all a nice wrap-up. G'bye gang.

Honestly, aside from clever bits here and there in the Avengers story, I feel this title DEFINITELY lost it spark a while ago.

I think that the comic has been consistently solid (aside from maybe the Good Guy/Bad Guy storyline) from beginning to end, though the joy of novelty wore off around the same time X-Statix began.

How could it have ended any other way?

Yeah I woulb've thought the quest for Doop's brain would shed some light onto that whole silent issue.

While there where some nice ironies/parrallels to their first appearance that final story just seemed sort of forced. Dead girl is sick and actually dies?

some of it was just a sort of write off... but still enjoyable. wonder what Mike allrad's up to next.

Allred's next project is adapting the book of mormon into comics. Seriously.

SPOILERS, 'natch.

I figure, due to the fact that they decided to just end the book before their inevitable cancellation, that we missed out on a good chunk of story... such as "What the hell is up with Doop?" and "What's the real story with Dead Girl?" Otherwise, this issue certainly lived up to the tagline on the cover... "Downbeat yet strangely moving." I felt like I'd been punched in the gut the entire time I was reading the book. I just knew they'd all bite it.

Shame, though. Still! It *is* feasible to bring Doop and Venus back from the "dead." Maybe even Dead Girl. Hell, we never saw Guy and Tike bite it *on-panel* no matter how obvious I was. *sniff* I'll miss the book.

True, the book's been on a general downward spiral since #12 (which confused me.. #11's brilliant, and suddenly, the book's just plain mediocre. Bah!) I stuck with it though, like a true fanboy. And now I'm only missing one ish, X-Force #116. The elusive bastard of a comic it is.

Ahh, well. It had a good run. And we still have Human Target! For now, anyway.

I collected it until the end about ish 12 (I think. I'm guesing). So, should I buy anything collected beyond that point?

I'll ask Macgyver for his opinion irl.

i finally got my comics for this week today. very appropriate ending.

nice Easter Egg, too: when Venus explodes, she turns into a Burning Man logo in the sky.

I will miss x-statix dearly. I found it generally very consistent. If doop does not show up in Milligan's upcoming X-MEN i shall be sorely dissapointed.

Milligan is great at creating and maintaining a state of indeterminacy in his narratives - sometimes he will even direct the audience towards one reading without invalidating other readings.

So yes, a case could be made that none of the x-statix actually died in this issue, that what we saw was just Guy's premonition that the might all die if they went on the mission. Or we could go with the Pulp Fiction reading.

It would also be fairly easy to claim a variety of X-statix actually survived their final mission - but I can't really see anyone wanting to use them - which i see as a good thing.

I really don't think it makes much sense for the X-Force/X-Statix characters to appear in other Marvel comics - I like that it's this pocket of the Marvel Universe which interacts with its own version of Marvel characters, but not necessarily the versions in the regular continuity. There's no really good reason to drag the X-Statix characters into the real X-men - it's a whole other thing. Milligan was wise to kill them all off.

Very good. Very sad.

Are You Ready....?

I actually got a bit tearful.

I had a wee choke at the Blackadder Goes Forth panel of Tike and Guy.

And the empty theatre.

*sigh*

I loved every minute of this. It must be the most out-there comic published with a Marvel logo; maybe some Gerber stuff beats it?

Boboss: you must have X-Statix v. Avengers - surely your brother or Neil Gaimbit can give you a lend.
