I'm starting this thread to draw your attention to the online archives of OVO magazine. OVO is a great zine that I used to get in the late 80s/90s. I actually went and stayed with it's creator, Trevor Blake in Portland, Oregon. The zine was/is a brillant creative mix of great writing, artwork and collage, inpsired in part by Andrea Juno and V. Vale's Re:Search series - angles on a variety of different topics, several issues of which were themed (on the subjects of Information, Mayhem, Control, Science, Travel and Suffering respectively). I still have my original issues filed in a box somewhere (they survived a recent purge) but I thought this might give all you net newbies a chance to check out what the creativity of the late 80s zine scene. Each issue has been archived online and they're all downloadable as PDFs. The files are taking a while to download on my system but I hope people find them worth it.
To give you an example of the contents, my favourite favourite thing EVER is the listing of the work of by tENATIVELY, A. Conveniecne's listing of his work in the Science issue (no. 12) which included sleeping in a giant radio, occupying his living space with 8' weather ballons and releasing dozens of crabs with baby doll parts to them into a local shopping centre. His Lidznap in the same issue is the funniest thing I've ever read.
Read and weep with joy. |
