A few weeks ago, I entered this film contest, which I found online by searching google for "film contest".

This morning, I open my e-mail and lo-and behold, find this message waiting for me:

"Congratulations!! We are very excited to announce that your submission to the Ready short film contest, are you ready?, has been selected by The America Prepared Campaign as a Finalist. It is one of ten films that will be screened by Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of Miramax films. He will be selecting the winning films from this group and the final results will be announced at the beginning of September. As part of the promotion effort behind this contest, America Prepared will be taking a few of these films to morning shows and other media outlets. At each of these events, they would like to share a little about the filmmakers behind the winning films. They have asked us to prepare bios on each of the finalists.

We think this is a great opportunity for each of you that have been named finalists to gain some exposure. To learn more about you and the film you submitted, we have prepared a questionnaire we are asking that you fill out. From the information you provide, we will write a one-page bio and share it with you before we pass it along to America Prepared. The attached list of questions is not a complete list. If there are other things you would like to share with us, please feel free. It should be noted that the information you provide may be aired on nationally broadcast media outlets.

Please send the questionnaire back to us by the end of the day on Wednesday, August 25, 2004. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to drop me an email or give me a call.

Thanks,
Matt

The America Prepared Campaign, led by entrepreneur and journalist Steven Brill, is a non-profit, non-partisan campaign that uses the talent and energy of American leaders in media, marketing, government, emergency preparedness, and business to encourage Americans to prepare for a terrorist attack. Through high-impact media spots, school based initiatives, corporate partnerships, and media education programs, America Prepared aims to support the work already begun by the Department of Homeland Security's "Ready Campaign" to give Americans useful recommendations for preparing their homes and their families for another terrorist attack.

Wowser. Please tell me your film was about dealing with a terrorist attack by zombies.

You know, you could do multiple submissions... maybe I should have done one about zombies.

"Zombies eat brains. One way to prepare for a zombie attack is to tie a dead animal to a chair, and saw it's skull open so it's brains drool out. Then attach a tripwire to the dead animal with the other end attached to a loaded shotgun. The zombie will smell the brains, try to eat them and BAM! No more zombie."

You think they would have gone for it?

Yippee! I have some good news on the contest, but unfortunetly MediaLiquid prevents me from saying any more. As soon as the results are officially announced I will divulge more.

Oh God, I forgot to give everyone updates on this. Quite a while ago, it was announced that I won one of the finalist prizes, worth $500 (you can read the press release here). Although it would have been, for lack of a better word, totally bitchin', to have won the $5000 grand prize, I'm really excited and somewhat surprised that I won anything at all. Simply the fact that I won money for a film I made is pretty inspiring.

If you guys want to see my entry (and I'm sure you do), you can watch it here.

If you want to see some of the photographs that went into making that (and some of the ones I left out), I just started a thread with some of my photography (much of it from this film) here.

Any criticism is appreciated.
(just please critique the photos in their own thread, please)
Enjoy!

Well done TeN.

What's the music?

I kind of wanted it to go on a bit longer, but I guess that's the nature of short films...

"What's the music?"
Maia Derewicz - Hidden Word

There's actually a funny story about the music there (heheh) - the whole copyright thing is kind of up in the air. When I found the song, it was as part of a compilation, and under a Creative Commons License, on Archive.org. But later, I found out that the compilation may have been posted with that license without the artist's permission. Weeks after the film had been submitted, I still couldn't get a reply from the compilation people regarding her contact info. Just a while ago, they finally sent it to me, after I had already found out that I won. They chose the wrong time though, because I was very sick, and bogged down by schoolwork and projects. So I still have her contact info, but I've been hesitant to call because a) I was only a finalist, so as far as I know, it's not going to be broadcast, b) I'm scared of what would happen were she to demand that it be taken down from the site, or worse, sue me, c) the longer I wait, the more embarresing it will be when/if I do call her

"thanks for your contribution to the culture of fear."
Hahaha, you're welcome. honestly, that thought was constantly nagging at my concious the whole time I made it. In the end though, it's not so much a fear campaign (the rules explicitly stated that you couldn't use fear as a tactic), as it is a preperation one. If you live in an urban area, I think you should be prepared.

Well and groovy, dude, but the painter's mask? Is that in case dastardly agents of a foreign power start using aerosol cans in a confined area - the devils! - or can one repel militant Islam using impromptu Altern-8 tributes?

Congratulations, anyway.
