Basic Design Texts

Though I did GCSE's with design elements they were all taught by fine art teachers who knew squat about graphic design. I am interested in dabbling in design again and am looking for a basic textbook that will give me some basic skills and concepts to work with. Any ideas?

I don't know about textbook type things, but for general inspiration, I'm looking to buy some of the following:

Color Index, Layout Index, and Idea Index by Jim Krause (3 seperate books)
The Big Book of Design Ideas
Graphic Design Cookbook

hope that helps some

Except for technical books on actionscripting and web design, I haven't really gone in search of many technical manuals and books regarding to design process. However, I do seem to see some decent reads to look into at the Newstoday archive.

I find that annuals and typography books are good for helping the creative process along some times and can give a different perspective on how one can handle a specific problem. Good use of typography is often overlooked in general and is pretty damn near the most important element on a page. Getting better seems to come through practice and a general awareness of how one can use image in a contemporary manner.
