What can you tell me about 808 State?

I heard one song on TOTP2, and a Stone Roses cover. Boith of them were quite intense sort of techno? is I dont know, sort of thing that goes down well with me anyway. Uh...is their other stuff good?

It's kind of out of date TBOH. I had EX:EL when I was a nipper, which had most of the hits on it (In yer Face, cubik) which is OK, but really Graham Massey and the boys' time has come and gone.

But... b-but, they had the only rap that bites-ah!

< Bonanza music >
< Or was it The Magnificent Seven? >

There was the obligatory 'best of' album a few years ago, get ahold of that as it should have all the best bits.

Newbuild (their 1st album?) is brilliant. totally low edge technology that can now be done on one keyboard, but totally brilliant.

That would be "The Only Rhyme That Bites", with the magnificent MC Tunes.

I was a huge 808 States fan back in the day, although I'd like to second MacGyver's assertion that their sound has dated badly.

Soulseek the aforementioned if you don't believe me.

Surprised no one has mentioned "Pacific State" yet, which was their most "anthemic" record, it's the one with the sax. It accompanied lots of sweating, gurning and hands-in-the-air-action in the early 90's. Halcyon days, my friends, halcyon days...interesting to see all the old ravers crawl out the woodwork on this and the Coldcut thread.

Agree that you might like New Build if you're on a retro acid house trip.... still got that somewhere I think, in the cupboard with the bottles of poppers and the glowsticks.
