"The Arab is sleeping"

One of my co-editors is dealing with a correspondent who wants to know what the phrase "The Arab is sleeping" means - his mother (deceased) used to use it whenever they saw the sunrise from their house (in California). It usually was part of the sequence: "Isn't it going to be a beautiful day. The Arab is sleeping."

My first thought is that it's a geographical allusion to the Middle East being "on the far side of the globe," so that the Californian day is the Arab night. That doesn't necessarily tie in with the first part, though, except that they both refer to the sunrise.

Anyone else have any other ideas? Has anyone actually heard this phrase before? We've ransacked our databases and reference books, and searched the web, and nothing so far.

Thanks!

That sounds like a plausible explanation, to be honest. The first part "it's going to be a beautiful day" may not necessarily have to be connected to the second- it's just probably more likely that the sunrise would be commented on if it was a nice one heralding a nice day.

I'm intrigued, though- I've never heard the expression before, but it has a nice sound to it. Let's hope it doesn't turn out to mean something horribly offensive, cos I like it.

Actually, it's a colloquial corruption of the Cthulhu cult's religious belief that their mad, destructive god had not yet woken to wreak havoc on the world; as long as he was "still sleeping" it could be said to be a good day indeed. Since one of the major proponents of the cult of the sleeping god was the "mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, over time the saying came to replace the repugnant (and difficult to pronounce) "Cthulhu" with "the Arab."

Well, yeah, but we can't say that, can we? I mean, we are a respectable institution...
