I am a Grant Morrison reader who is curious about performing magicks. How exactly do I start? Which books are good to read, ect?

you could start with grant's site, and read as much of 'pop magick' as he has written there.
if you like him and his style, you will undoubtedly love it.

probably the best way to figure out what to tell you apart from that is to ask you a question. well, okay two.

what do you want your magickal practice to do for you, besides make you feel like you are living in the world He created in the invisibles?
what have you done so far?

1. I don't want anything specifically. I just want to try it out.
2. Haven't done anything since I don't know where to start.
Thanks!
P.S. ON second thought, finding a cool girlfriend would be nice.

Sigils are a great place to start and DO work

THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD HEED, HAS ALREADY BEEN GIVEN....READ UP BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANYTHING

You probably remember the old Warning story about wishing for money

You get the money but somebody dies and leaves you it in their will

Okay, this is a massive jump and might not happen but you should be aware that your actions will impact on others and you should be respectful and careful in your work

Excellent advice as always on this up to now, please take heed but enjoy your successes once you have read a bit more

Good luck

Ummm... I just don't agree with this. I've been doing magick for more than 20 years, and looking back, especially at the early days, I just didn't get into trouble by getting on with it. Quite the reverse.

I think better advice is listen to your gut, be humble, get used to distinguishing between feeling excitement, feeling a bit of fear, and KNOWING this is WRONG and I got to GET OUT OF HERE.

Magic doesn't have to be about "getting something". Magic's an end in itself. Like meditation, or sex, or food. Or football.

Starting with pop magic is a great way to start, though as I remember it, it's pretty results-oriented. Some good things to do to just start feeling it:

Auric egg meditation (better than it sounds!): http://www.philhine.org.uk/writings/rit_auricegg.html
Sensory enhancement:

And genius loci stuff:

Just remember, be nice to yourself, don't give yourself a hard time, and don't take it too seriously. It'll get freaky in its own time. Magick defends itself.

Hi Dickens,

Aside from the great links posted above, a really good introductory book is Modern Magick by Donald Michael Kraig. It will give you basic techniques for visualization, concentration, banishing and invoking, introduce you to the tarot, kabbalah, talismans, amulets, evocation, etc. etc. You can decide what you want to learn more about as you go, but it provides an all around introduction and is very user friendly.

Another good one is Visual Magick by Jan Fries. Actually anything by Jan Fries, IMHO.

Enjoy yourself!
