Full prizes for anyone who recognised the title thread as a quote from Donald Campbell. It's also the name of a rather fine play written by a friend of mine that is currently running as part of the Rep season at the Lakeside theatre, Keswick. In the unlikely event that anyone from this webdoohicky has been to see it then I'd be hugely interested in hearing peoples opinions, whether you loved it, hated it, or were ambivalent about it.
It's the story of a Grandfather, a mother, and a daughter and how they interact with each other, their secrets, their lies, and how confrontation and honesty will change everything, and everything they think they know about each other, for ever. And in the background the Bluebird of Conniston has finally been found...
If that sounds cliched and pat then I can assure you the whole thing is handled very well. The way the whole structure of the thing is reflected in the grandfathers obsession with Donald Campbell, his death, his boat, and even the reason for naming the boat Bluebird is rather lovely. If you've got the chance to see it before the run ends in November then I recommend it. And I'd be doing that if I'd never met Julie. |
