First Contact? "Alien Device" in Siberia

Russians find 'alien device' at Tunguska.

Guided by the space photos, the researchers scanned a wider territory in the vicinity of the Poligusa village for parts of the space object that crashed into Earth in 1908 and was later called the Tunguska meteorite.

The scientists claim that they found remains of an extraterrestrial technical device that allegedly had an accident in Siberia in 1908.

I heard this mentioned on the radio this morning, but it took me a while to track it down. You'd think - even if it turns out to be hooey - that it might at least be a story. But no.

Anyone else hear anything?

Ran on ananova earlier today but nothing verifiable. The tone of the article was skeptical at best.

Another one to file under wait and see.

Is today Russian April Fool's Day or something? The news services here don't seem to be biting. I'm being taken for a ride, aren't I?

From the BBC in 1999; an earlier expedition.

Eventually something like this has to be true.

Does it? I don't see why it has to be true, just because we have a concept for something, doesnt mean that it has to be.

Well, we know the team claims to have found a chunk of rock and a strange metal cube. What we don't know is if they really mean it. I expect if this is a hoax, we'll see a retractment from them in a few days or so.

Or simply no further statement on the matter, if it is actually for real.

Nah, I don't reckon this holds any water, if it did, the usual news groups would be all over it.

It's very much wait-and-see, isn't it? It's idiotic to say 'they can't have found anything because it's silly' - that's the great 'when I touch the frogs' legs, they will not move!' moment.

But yeah - it seems far-fetched. On the other hand: "Our world gets more like theirs every day."

just because we have a concept for something, doesnt mean that it has to be.

Of course but we're not talking about something little here. We're actually talking about abduction accounts from every culture, a huge fascination and a universe that's absolutely huge. Our concept of alien life is probably entirely absurd... greys? Life forms with two legs? Doubtful. An alien device on our planet though is plausible and why would the press report it- it might or might not be otherwordly- aliens aren't 'in' at the moment and the press are normal people living normal lives. How the hell do they know if it's a real story or not?

Of course when you come down to it I'm still in love with Jodi Dean so I remain cynical but open-minded.
