Sorry for the vaguely spam-like nature of this thread, but I've just discovered that VANISHING POINT, unquestionably the coolest film ever made, is on British TV tomorrow.

ITV, 11.05pm

If you haven't seen it before, watch it, watch it, watch it. It is unbeatable.

Thank you for your time.

Midgets, anything with midgets in is great.

It's on late though, and the video and ariel at mine isn't working. Haven't seen this for years, may have to get the parents onto videoing dutes (however, despite them not being cack handed on the techi front, the last three things that I've asked them to record have all been faliures).

Boo. Buy the DVD, kids. Seriously: it’s in lovely lovely widescreen, and it doesn’t have ad breaks messing with the vibes every 20 minutes. I was even considering saving my pennies for a second copy, after being reliably informed that the Region 1 has been magically restored to include the legendary Charlotte Rampling-as-hippy-hitchiker scene. Which sounds interesting.

Although agree with the unquestionably the coolest film ever made bit. Baby.

There goes the Challenger, being chased by the blue, blue meanies on wheels! The vicious traffic squad cars are after our lone driver, the last American hero, the-the electric sintar, the demi-god, the super driver of the golden west! Two nasty nazi cars are close behind the beautiful lone driver; the police numbers are gettin' closer, closer, closer to our sole hero in his soul mobile, yeah baby! They're about to strike, they're gonna kill him, smash him, rape! -- the last beautiful free soul on this planet. But it is written, as the evil spirit armeth the tiger with claws, Brahman provideth wings for the dove. Thus spake the super guru.

I caught some of this in a hotel last night, first thinking it was smokey and the bandit and then realising what it actually was, other person in the room needed to sleep but it looked cool so I'm going to search for it online...

Well I stayed up and watched it, despite already owning it on video and having seen it, like, 28 times or something.

It just gets better every time. The realisation that it's all a big metaphor for the fate of the 60s counter-culture and the American Dream adds a totally gratuitous additional layer of coolness onto what is already the dictionary definition of coolness.

And the footage/cinematography/editing/mise en scene is all fucking amazing throughout - a truly beautifully made film - the epitome of Hollywood style-over-content as high art.

And some of the music fucking destroys as well - SURELY someone must have (re)issued the soundtrack at some point..

The soundtrack was reissued, on vinyl only, by a label called Harkit a couple of years ago but is now out of print. It's been bootlegged quite a lot though, check out your nearest record fair.
