I've just finished this book and I have to say it is the most enjoyable thing I've read in ages. Yes it's drippily romantic and as a work of historical fiction, Ms.Morgan takes liberties wherever possible. I have not checked it against the pedant meter to verify accuracies and can heartily say that I will not be interested in possible mistakes or ommissions. I will however, be taking some little London walks to look for myself on places mentioned as homes and haunts of Byron and Shelley and Mary and Augusta and Lady Caroline Lamb and I will go find Fanny Brawne's thorny tree in Hampstead.
Perhaps this book belongs in a category of romance which I would usually shun, and it was a Mary Shelley facination which brought it to me; still, for the last 6 weeks nightly reading, I've been enthralled. You try it. |
