just saw this at Warren Ellis' blog. a lot of people sent him this because it's almost as if the TRANSMETROPOLITAN character Fred Christ came to life.

Jushua believes to have been abducted and that some alien essense stayed with him. so he had his body radically transformed in order look more like a grey alien. amazing pics at link [not for everybody, I suppose].

I will admit though that I also think it's (my hair) a bit of a safety blanket... One day I'll probably shave it all off. I did it once, but I just couldn't go anywhere without people freaking out!

That took a lot of skill, anyway. The forehead is particularly nicely done. If I met Joshua while I was really sleep-deprived I might think I'd had an alien encounter myself.

yeah. well... if you read the whole interview you'll learn there are limits to what can be done. I admire that the main guy reponsible for his modifications drew a line and told him NO, WE CAN'T MAKE YOUR ORBITS LARGER, OTHERWISE YOUR EYEBALLS MAY FALL. or something.

gentle, maybe people don't freak out when his hair is not shaved because from behind or from a distance he can be mistaken for a person with deformities [or just a veru strange face] rather than a completely bald grey alien walking around in daily clothes.

Quite possibly. Actually for some reason I had assumed he was talking about having shaved it at one point before the modifications. I suppose that makes more sense, now that I think about it this way.

OK, scepticism about visitations from aliens aside, I find the psychology behind this kind of thing fascinating. This kind of body modification is so severe that it is hard to just palm it off as an attention getting gimmick.

Could one compare this to individuals who change their gender? Except that in this case, the feeling of being in the wrong type of body has been scrambled and has ended up expressing itself as a desire to be a grey?

I think it's interesting, the fact that he said a Grey seemed like it was imprinted over him and he never felt the same after that.
