It's payday! What records will you buy this month?

Well? I know all you lot are downloading - or uploading in some cases - all sorta tings at the speed of light, but one of best bits of music consumption is the pre-selecting based on word of mouth or reviews, the idle browsing in record shops, that "of course I can afford one extra CD" self-deception.

So - what's looking tempting this month, and why?

For myself - a reggae tape I've done for a mate has been particulary well received so I'm thinking of stocking up a bit in that area. There's a limited edition comp called Studio One Auction that I wouldn't mind getting my hands on - and trekking down to Dub Vendor to get it means I get to riffle through the 7" repress box...

I'm also thinking about buying Nurse With Wound's last album Salt Marie Celeste as it got great reviews in the end of year selections, but I never picked it up. I like what I've heard of NWW, and find the existence of such a bizarre sonic experiement fascinating but have never really brought much of their stuff (only one album which I wasn't hugely into), so this seems a good (re)starting point. My tolerance for weirdo noise seems to be on the up again, plus I like to torture my girlfriend.

The Tragically Hip's new album to supply a soundtrack for my homeward bound roadtrip and I may try and order Bowie's Ouside album again.

I just bought Mobb Deep's 'The Infamous', cos I've been feeling the mid-90's Queensbridge vibe pretty strongly recently. The best thing about most of this stuff is it's all available for around £6.

Also thinking of buying the new Masta Killa album, and some Sonic Youth. Undecided. Will see how weekend spending goes.

On payday (Tuesday) I bought the new(ish) Ghostface ("The Pretty Toney Album"), Sunn 0)))'s "White 2" and (in the sale) New Order's "Substance" (cos it's too much fucking effort to go into the living room and hope no-one's in it to listen to vinyl).

Downloaded a shitload of Alec Empire, Whitehouse and Coil, too.

Do you rate 'Substance' Stoat? Cos I nearly bought it 'tother day, but didn't. Opinion please?

I allready spoiled myself with 7 dvds for € 7,50 per piece (some early Cronenberg & Dario Argento) and the first complete Peanuts comic for € 55,25. This directly after the 10 days mayhem of the Ghent city festival.

Now working in the night shift, free at monday morning. Next week I might go the most dangerous place in town (that is: dangerous for my wallet): a street with a cheap record store and a comic store across each other. I'm thinking about buying CDs by: !!!, McClusky & Neurosis with Jarboe. When there's still € left, I'll cross the street and look for TPBs of Lucifer, Y the last man & Swamp Thing

Mark Lanegan Band's new album. But I can't remember what it's called. Luckily he's only released one under that name, so it shouldn't be a problem... why? 'Cause he's collaborating with Polly Harvey, QOTSA and two of the original cast of G n' R. Why else?

Jack The Bodiless

Oh yeah. 'Cause he's the 'grunge' Tom Waits, and therefore the New Best Thing Ever.

MacGyver-yeah, it's all the singles up to and including "True Faith", plus a secon CD of B-sides. If you like NO, it's kind of essential (although to my mind, if I had to only have one, I'd get the album "LowLife", which is just coolness incarnate). Not quite as good as the Joy Division compilation of the same name, though, but then, what is?

Olivia Tremor Control - Dusk at Cubist Castle

Why? Because it's been on my wishlist for months, but I've been dirt poor. And because I've run out of Beatles records to buy, so this is the next best thing.

The new Master Killa album is actually pretty good. He's improved a lot as an MC, and some of the tunes are brilliant. One for downloading rather than buying, though.

Hey Stoatie, where on earth is Sunn O))) on sale??

It's aagggeees since I bought any music of note, but it was my birthday yesterday, so my parents have sorted me out with some coolness;

Acid Mothers Temple - Electric Heavyland

Bloody hell!! I had to turn this off halfway through, I was starting to feel delirious... this disc is unbelievable.. it's like all the loud climax bits from other AMT records shredded through again and again with increasing intensity and absolutely no remorse... nothing I've heard before touches it for sheer "Jimi Hendrix and Led Zep blasting through a 5 dimensional wormhole into divine infinity" style headfuck.

Boredoms - Chocolate Synthesizer

Bloody hell!! The first early-ish Boredoms material I've listened to, and I wasn't really expecting this. I don't know what to make of it really, it's just.. horrible. It's music that sounds like it's been more vomited than composed and yet.. I won't deny it's absolutely fascinating. 10 out of 10 for "I have no idea what this is or why it was made, but could you turn it off please we're trying to eat" factor.

Sunn 0))) - White 1
Bloody hell!! etc.

Only listened to the first track. Julian Cope's monologue is absolutely hilarious. The fifteen minutes after he finishes nearly made me shit myself in cosmic terror and quite possibly buggered my speakers.
"You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll hurl", as I recall the tagline for Waynes World II boasted. Sunn o))) ladies and gentlemen, fun for all the family.

I'm eyeing up a six-disc Trojan dub boxset. Why? Because I've, for no discernable reason decided that yes! dub! that is what I shall listen to! Onl I don't have any. Should I?

I got White 2 in HMV in Angel. I REALLY want White 1, mostly for Copey.

And yes, Electric Heavyland is truly fucking insane.

Sure thing mate. Only prob is most of my reggae is on vinyl so it'll have to be tapes unless you want to wait until I buy a minidisc. Added two more albums to the collection this weekend - the aforementioned Studio 1 7" Auction which is a fucking killer and a nice Beverley's Records comp - so tapes ahoy, Mr _pin - I'll drop you a PM.

For the record, I also brought Sunburned Hand of the Man: Rare Wood< Can: Monster Movie and a mad compilation of music from Indian radio. I spent too much money, but it was gooooood.

I'm just off to Camden to buy comics with the last of my moth's wages... but I feel a record shop detour coming on, as I'm going through a particularly intense phase of my continuing love affair with Coil, and am feeling a bit guilty about all the downloading I've been doing recently... so looks like World Serpent may be getting some more of my cash in the immediate future.
Those four live CDs (or at least one of them, maybe two) are looking tempting...

pin: I've got the dub nine disc set, the Rastafari three disc set, and the Jamaican Hits set. I think.

I picked up 'Moon Hop' a 2 disk Derrick Morgan comp, covering his ska and rocksteady output. Which is excellent. "I am the conqueror"

Also got a budget Prince Fari comp, the name of which escapes me. It's mostly dub orientated, a few great tracks, a load of quite pleasing but not exceptional dub cuts.

And a comp called 'Reefer Madness 1927-1945' which is basically a load of early jazz and blues tracks containing drug references. Cheesy, I know, but there's some great and fairly obscure songs on there, and it was only £6 quid.

But... but... I thought all you crazy kids today downloaded shit and then bought it later on! I'm sure that's what y'all told the BPI! Oh, the disillusionment... or, y'know, the lying. Whaaaaatever.

I'm trying to behave myself as far as record purchases are concerned this month, having lost control whilst browsing gemm.com a few week back (did I really pay $45 for a Japan-only promo of a record I already own just for the Dem 2 b-side remix? My credit card statement seems to think I did).

I just got paid and I bought Bobby conn - The Homeland because I'd been listening to the glam/electro loveliness of 'Relax' for weeks and desperately wanting more. I'm going to Rough Trade after work today to get Dopesmoker by Sleep because someone told me it's an hour-long distilation of the first 4 Black Sabbath albums filtered through several kilos of hash, and that sounds good to me.

I brought FAR TOO MUCH Northern Soul yesterday.

The Lost Soul of Detroit
Rare, Collectible And soulful: RCA records compilation
King Northern Soul: Compilation from King Records
Kent Brainstormers
Kent Floorshakers

The last two being now deleted LPs in the mighty Kent labels reissue series. It's like a one man Wigan casino in this living room, I tell you. Northern Soul thread coming soon.

Got a bonus last month in the paycheck... My fav shop rockinghorse scored the cash and I walked away with these:

Squarepusher: Hello Everything. AU$29.95 I fell in love with "Feed me weird things" as it was my first foray into drumn'bass. I also have Ultravisitor and the Vic Acid EP. I bought it on reccomendations from a mate, only heard half the album, 2 good songs so far but the rest will grow on me, I can tell already.

Anthony Rother: Super Space Model. $32.95 I have one previous album from a friend but do not know what the name is. It's the song with Haircolor on it. I'm loving the first song "Nature", I'll be talking with a German accent for the rest of the day. "Ve ah der Phewchar"

Screaming Trees: Ocean of Confusion. $21.95 I bought this because I was dreaming two nights ago of one of their albums "Uncle Anesthesia" and the song Alice Said. It is on this compilation so I had to get it. I lost the tape ages ago.

Tom Waits: orphans. $70.00 I do so love the art of Tom. I will be waiting for the right time to put this on a stereo and digest it properly.

Current 93: Black Ships Ate the Sky. $30.95 I saw the album cover first not knowing it was C93. My first C93 album bought solely on the Stoats thread recommendations. I like Nurse with Wound but I feel this will be a bit different, yet to play.

Tortoise: A Lazarus Taxon. $44.95 I have a softspot for this band, it's as big as Jupiters Redspot. 3 CD's of rarities and remixes, most of which I already own but... There is also a DVD with some live footage. I so need to go buy a telly now to watch this on, the laptop does no justice at all.

so all up I went through AU$230.75 so stick that in your fucking arse RIAA.

Pepsi Max
02:50 / 03.12.06
Suitcase Rider - www.bleep.com does lots of this stuff as downloads for about half the price of the physical CD. Albums are about AU$15 a pop.

Anyway, sounds like you have a veritable feast there...
