I was talking to my friend the other day about this cartoon and, even though I haven't thought about it in years, I have only fond memories for. This was a really great show!

I remember a really great time travel episode where Cracker Jack send Goslin (sp.) into the future and DW has turned the future in a dark police state cause he lost her (since she left to the future)!

Does anyone know if there's any chance they'll release a DVD boxset of this? (Or any other Disney Afternoon cartoons from the early 90s, like Duck Tales, which was also fantastic.)

Lets get dangerous!

I cannot believe I'd forgotten about Darkwing Dark, this was probably one of the best cartoon series that Disney ever made.

Relive your Darkwing Duck nostalgic moments here.

I also loved Tailspin featuring Baloo the bear as a pilot in some kind of screwball comedy that seemed to be set in the 1930s.

oh, oh yeah, I remember that episode! that was really rad, like I remember that Darkwing became this ultra-bad-ass and stuff and then like...well..I only really remember him being a ultra-bad-ass cause that was really cool. and remember negaduck? and bushroot? maaan, that show was fuckin awesome.

I am the weirdo that sits next to you on the bus!

Negaduck was actually the coolest!

You know another thing I really liked but completely forgot? The rivalry between DW and Gizmoduck. And that Gosalyn (this is the correct sp) became a sidekick called Quiverwing Quack!

It took a while to remember Darkwing, but I remember liking the show. Although I was more of an Earthworm Jim fan, now that is a DVD I would buy -

Jim (as the hurtle towards a black hole) : Don't worry I have three super worm brains, they'll know how to get out of this!

cut to cross section of brains;

brain one: I'm cold
brain two: I'm hungry
brain three: Where are the girls?

I remember this being on but I never really watched it -- now I wish I had.... maybe they'll come out with the DVD collection? Write Disney, I guess...

YEEEEEEEAHH! thats Gizmoduck!!! now I remember! damn, Impulsivelad, thanks for coming up with this thread! oddly enough I was talking to my friends about this cartoon and tried to sing the theme song and was heckled for all the inaccuracies. and we talked about Alf too. remember Alf? his name, stands for Alien Life Form, or Alf Loves Felines or Alf Lives Forever the last ones the best...
Anyways back to Darkwing, or well Gizmoduck, he had his own show right? or was he just a cool supporting character? No no, he was on Ducktales right?

help...

The Water-Dog guy was the poorly-named supervillain "Liquidator".

My favorite was Megavolt.

Oh, and Gizmoduck was originally on DuckTales, but he kinda bled over onto Darkwing Duck, much like DW's sidekick, Mr. Launchpad McQuack.

Also, I always hated Gosalyn.

Gizmoduck, Superman to Darkwing's Batman.

They should've totally had Gizmoduck in that Ducks of Futures Past episode or whatever it was called. And they should've made Gizmoduck a government stooge because they know his secret codeword [Blatherinblatherskite!] Darkwing as psychotic asshole! eah! And then they should've had a fight at the end! To the death!

That actually would've been fantastic.

I remember DW has a romantic interest. Some hot duck chick who was also the mistress of the mystic arts. But DW never wanted to commit.

I was watching Duck Dodgers the other day and although it's a good show it doesn't touch Darkwing Duck in coolness. Daffy Duck is just silly all the time but DW was pretty badass with the occasional (at least once an episode) slapstick buffoonery. He'd so school Duck Dodgers in a fight!

He also had a cool alter ego: Drake Mallard!

She toootally wants to jump his bones...

but Darkwing would've beaten Gizmoduck, right? didn't they sort of fight one time and like DW like turned his own suit on him at one point?

they have to bring this back on dvd, I can't remember everything so well.

could we hear some more DW catchphrases?

I adored that show! I had never Seen Jungle Book but knew who Baloo was but was still confused as to why he was running his own plane-delivery service. Great style. Loved the 30's aspect. I saw a movie that clearly inspired it but forget the name of it now...

I have vague memories of Darkwing Duck, but I really liked Tailspin, mainly because of the the thirties serial feeling to it. Sort of Indiana Jone-esque. Didn't he have a female boss, with a kind of Sam/Rebecca (from "Cheers") dynamic to it.
As for the film I believe it's called "Only Angels Have Wings", an old Howard Hawks flick with Cary Grant.

slight thread rot and small piece of trivia for you cartoon loving folks:

Tailspin was based on the live action series "Tales of the Golden Monkey". Same set up but I remember that (at least in the UK) the live show got axed because it was felt it was too violent for the kiddies and then Tailspin appeared with the Jungle Book characters to add the old-school disney feel(so there for not at all violent, although Baloo did kick the shit out of Sher Khan [apologies for crap spelling] with a burning branch).

I return you to the regular thread with a small comment:

"Freakazoid was so much better"

Ohh-wei-oh! Tailspin!

Tailspin was the fucking shit. Pirates, action, adventure, exotic locations, cliffhangers, maniacal villains and stalwart heroes! You're spot on abou the 30s serial feel. Roaring pulp action at its finest in the tradition of the Mummy and Dr. Jones Jnr.

Can hardly remember it now, though. Must. use. eBay.

I dug DuckTales for a while too. "Every day they're out there making DuckTales -- tales of derring-do, bad and good LuckTales!" Scrooge McDuck was awesome. I think it was just Scrooge and the 3 Duck nephews having adventures.

My favorite character on Tailspin was Shir Kahn. I remember him as being this neutral force: not good, not evil, but ultra powerful and super cool. There's nothing quite like a tiger in an Armani suit. And then there was Louie, I liked him better in the Jungle Book, actually...was Baghira ever on the show?

Darkwing Duck was one of my favorite of the Disney Afternoon cartoons, which all stayed quality up until they brought in series like Bonkers T. Bobcat and The Mighty Ducks, with only Gargoyles as its saving grace. These days, the only cartoon Disney puts on TV that's worth my time is Kim Possible, which has some of the best writing of any cartoon out there. Ron Stoppable has some of the best dialogue imaginable: "Didn't I tell you? 40 miles of bad road! Bad road, bad road, bad road!" or "'Fraternal', huh? That's a school word, isn't it?"

One of my favorite episodes of Darkwing was their spoof of "Twin Peaks," where Launchpad begins holding logs to his head and intoning, "The coooows are not what they seeem..." And they're not; they're from the planet Larson on the Far Side of the galaxy. Gotta love them jokes thrown in there that a good half of the audience has no chance of getting.

Kim Possible rocks like a Floridian hurricane from the retro-sixties style, but 21st century quality, animation to the dialogue. It's consistently hilarious alternating between playing the setup straight or for parody, without feeling schizophrenic.

Oh, and the one-liners are quality:

[Just before dropping Ron and Kim into a tank of sharks]
Dr. Drakken: I hope you can stay.
Kim: For Lunch?
Dr. Drakken: I wasn't going to say that.
Ron: You were so "for lunch"
Dr. Drakken: Fine, stay for lunch!
[drops them in]

Shego: (interrupts Drakken's rant) He's building an army of robots.
Drakken: Why do you do that? The evil rant is one of the best parts of the job!
Shego: Yeah, well, it's BORING.

TailSpin + Tales Of The Gold Monkey = My Luminous Childhood.

Tales Of The Gold Monkey was by far my favorite show.

CUTTER'S GOOSE!
THE ONE EYED DOG (WHOSE EYE THEY ACTUALLY FIND AROUND THE NECK OF SOME THUG! WHAT ARE THE ODDS??)

It's right up there with Lottery$ for me.

Surprisingly I was never that heavily into Darkwing Duck, mainly because I was so into Duck Tales and was pissed that it wasn't on any more. TaleSpin was great. Chip & Dale was also tiiiight.

Duck Tales! OoWooOoh!

I don't think there's anything retro about it. It's a natural evolution of the Disney house style. Good to see they're allowing it to change, even if it's too late to save the bacon of the 2-D animation department. One of the reasons I enjoy it so much is that Kim reminds me of a certain "one that got away" in my life. Not so much physically, but she definitely had a gentle sardonicism that I find incredibly sexy.

I just remembered a choice bit of dialogue from Darkwing, from the two-parter featuring the formation of the Justice Ducks. Stegmutt has just been duped by Liquidator into pretending Darkwing was on fire, resulting in his whacking Darkwing against the ground while singing, "Put out the Darkwing, put out the Darkwing!" Moments later, Stegmutt lands on Darkwing from a great height, prompting this exchange:

DW: Thhhat was the second most painful experience of my life.
S: What was the first?
DW: "Put out the Darkwing, put out the Darkwing!"
