Democratic National Convention

I love this time of year, especially when a young mans fancy turns to thoughts of partisanship. This is my Super-Bowl. NPR has exhaustive coverage of the DNC convention in Boston and I couldn't be happier. Well, I could if the Democrats could get their heads out of their asses and realize that they wont get the kind of enthusiasm they need until the accept an ethos, a direction, a platform of some kind other than "we're not Bush."

But nonetheless, the game is on!

All of the speakers have played nice-nice so far, no outright Arbolito bashing.

First impressions: Kerry won't have to say a word because he's surrounded himself with American Icons: The Strong Woman/Immigrant, The Self-Made Millionaire, The Maverick...

I heard Ted Kennedy speaking last night and couldn't help but notice the man is losing his voice.

...John Ed-wads!

(God, it is so fun to impersonate any of the Kennedys)

Barack Obama's speech Tuesday night knocked my hat into the proverbial creek (A friend of mine said something to the effect of "What if we're watching the early appearance of the first black president?"). It was energizing to hear him.

"The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue states; red states for Republicans, blue states for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states."

Strong and compelling oratory that we need more of at this convention. I pity the guy the GOP puts against him. After Tuesday night, he should all but be locked in for the Illinois senator's seat. With even greater things to come.

Shy of Obama though (and Clinton's speech on Monday), it's been kind of dull.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed Teresa Heinz Kerry's speech. I was delighted that the pundits we're expecting her to act as springboard for her husband, and went and introduced herself instead. "Opinionated" indeed.

I've seen Barack Obama (hope I got that right) touted as a potential candidate for 2016 as a result of that speech (in the Independent, I think).

(I find that kind of thinking ahead very odd - 2016!? Over here opposition leaders change every 2 years or so...)

I think half of Europe must have fallen in love with Teresa Heinz Kerry after she whipped out seven or however-many-odd languages. That was absolutely wonderful! Even knowing one language other than your own says so much about your attitude towards the world outside your own country.

Kerry's speech last night was one of the best American ideals speeches I have ever heard. It really was better than porn. Even I clapped the bit about stem cell research.

I really like Edwards. What a shame...
