It is a terribly good film with the funniest and longest fight in the history of cinema.

Cripple Fight!!!

"Timmy. Put. On. The. Hat!" (or something like that)

I love They Live. Especially the longest and most unnecessary fight in film history. Probably the most subversive (contemporary/'mainstream') film I'd seen as a 14 year old. Must watch it again soon...

Does anyone have a good site for stills from it?

"I have come here to kick ass and to chew gum! And I'm allll out of gum."
Apparently that line wasn't in the script, it just popped into Roddy's head when he walked through the door of the bank.
I think Jackie Chan beat the "put on the glasses!" fight (14 1/2 minutes) in "The Young Master" (20 minutes), but, yeah, that's the longest fight in a film made in the west.

It is indeed an absolute all-time classic, and a personal favourite movie of mine

Especially the gratuitous wrestling scene. And the bubblegum line quoted above.

The Fog was done by Carpenter? Shit that film scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Ok so I had a fever of 103 at the time but still....scary!!

Oh yes. It seems silly now, but this little bit of subversion totally changed the way I looked at media when I saw it at a tender age. Did its job, for sure. I still love the film. Even picked it up on DVD.

Fog, fantastic. Best is still Assault on Precinct 13 - the man shoots a little girl in the opening ten minutes.

What ever happened to John Carpenter? He used to make really good films, write them, direct them, score them. Stuff that was always entertaining and interesting and often with a certain subtlety and depth.
Now he does crap like "Vampires" and "Ghosts of Mars" (starring Ice Cube and Jason Statham, the sign of a poor movie), which are just shit. Poorly made, poorly acted garbage really. It's a shame, because he used to be class.

They Live was inspired by a Republican National Convention during the Reagan years -- when they bulldozed a homeless settlement/squatter's camp so the delegates wouldn't have to see the fruits of Reaganomics.

Has Carpenter produced anything since W took office?

Are you serious or kidding about this?

It actually happened, if that's what you're asking.

But was the movie really inspired by that event?

According to the credits, it was based on a Ray Nelson (who I only know from his book "The Ganymede Takeover" with Philip K Dick" story called something like "Early One Morning"... anyways, something with "One Morning" in it.

However, I'm guessing artistic license was taken, and I kind of like the idea of it being inspired by a Rep con. Now I can tell all my friends that They Live is actually biting political satire. With wrestling.

OK, so of course we all know this, but the film is an extended allegory for many things, not least among them switching yourself on with acid.

Hofman Glasses, see? Which get you 'high' but leave you with a 'headache'.
And, like, you see through all the corporate bullshit to the True Message Beneath.

Its Cosmic. And fucking hilarious.

"See you - You're Okay! This one? Real Fuckin' Ugly!"

There you have it. Take drugs, kids. Fight the Alien Power!

I talked it over with George last night over dinner and he basically admitted he stole the idea for the Invisibles from this film.
