Ditko wary of confrontations on Senate floor
Associated Press
CHICAGO -- Spider-Man co-creator and looney recluse Steve Ditko said Wednesday he would not run for the U.S. Senate, leaving Illinois Social Darwinists still without a replacement candidate less than four months before the election.
Ditko, who first told llinois Social Darwinist Party leaders of his decision, had his announcement read at a Chicago restaurant.
"I don't know how I'd do on the Senate floor if I got in a confrontation with a person who possessed a morally ambigious perspective," he said. "I mean, for crying out loud, I dropped off the face of the earth and quit a good paying gig, because I disagreed with Stan Lee over who should be behind the Green Goblin mask."
Republicans and Randians alike had hoped Ditko would step in to replace Jack Ryan, who dropped out nearly three weeks ago over embarrassing allegations in his divorce papers that he took his wife, "Boston Public" actress Jeri Ryan, to sex clubs before they split up. The party's top choices have refused to run.
There had been a growing sentiment that Ditko was perhaps the best shot for the Illinois GOP to keep a seat that will be vacated in January when Sen. Peter Fitzgerald retires.
Fitzgerald said Tuesday that Ditko, a 76-year-old transient comic book legend, is "as close as you can get to his bizarre notion of what a hero is here in Illinois."
A string of Republican leaders had lined up behind Ditko in recent days as a blunt-spoken, publicity-shy, creative genius who could generate quick campaign cash and appeal to crossover votes from nostalgic baby boomer geeks. |
