Looking for a new favourite Vietnamese restaurant in London...

I thought I'd give it another go, but alas, my old favourite Vietnamese place, Viet Hoa in London, has been bumped off the top position. Does anyone have any suggestions to replace it?

There's a nice Vietnamese place on Wardour Street in Soho. What area are you after MsCirmish? and why's Viet Hoa off the top spot?

There is a decent place down in Camden - up by the stables - can't remember its name but its shop front is yellow if that helps.

Walk down Kingsland road towards Dalston Junction. Take a left about a block after FAulkner's chip shop and walk down a residential looking street. There's a white building there which is kind of like a vietnamese community centre where the vietnamese food is amazing. It's always packed though, so be prepared to wait for a table...

Dude, where's my car?

Only I think that place was Chinese, not Vietnamese.

Thanks to all. I'll check them out... I'm especially excited about the little place off Kingsland.

Viet Hoa is off my top list because the service was tardy and the food wasn't as amazing as it has been. A friend of mine said the last time she was there, lots of people were sending food back. Shame... I have such good memories of the place.

I used to be totally hooked on this Cambodian place, but they changed owners, and then I realised the meat I was eating still had HAIR on it. I mean, not just the thick black curly pubes like you get with Turkish pizza, the pork had big black BRISTLES growing out of it! Where do you even GET hairy meat from?! I thought they steamed the hair out on the processing line at the abbotoir! And it was, like, fully over half just fat. I had a chunk of fat sitting on my plate half the size of my fist.
And I won't eat at the Chinese place upstairs since a live cockroach ran out of the fried rice on my plate.
And Delifrance gave me salmon that had turned BROWN. They didn't even have doors on their meat case. Bastards.
Gwah! I'm running out of places to eat!

The Viet Hoa was my favourite for years, but definitely went down hill after the minor re-furb. But fret not! there is light at the end of this particular Viet tunnel.

I moved to Camberwell last year, and whilst walking down Camberwell Church Street saw a very tacky (as only the Vietnamese can) but clean looking small Viet restaurant called The Hoa Viet. In the window is a top review by none other than Fay Maschler (for it was she...)

Apparently, some friends of Maschler's who lived nearby and were regulars there had asked her for a top recommendation in Paris as they were off there for the weekend. She duly obliged with some top of the range Michelin place, but requested they return the favour. Without hesitation they recommended the Hoa Viet, she duly went along, and gave it top marks.

The place really is a gem, the family who run it are lovely, with dad a big smiling caricature of Vietnamese hospitality, the portions are huge, the veg and herbs etc are very fresh, it is very cheap (no credit cards) and they even have Hue Beer.

Get the 35 from virtually outside the Viet Hoa all the way to Camberwell Green, and its about 1 min walk down Church Street on your right. (or the 42 from Bishopsgate)

The best Vietnamese food I have had outside Viet Nam.

P.S. I have heard very good things about the Dalston community center place too...
