Help me find a label

Hey everyone.

I'm finally getting round to sounding out record labels to see if they're interested in releasing one of my pieces, I Am the Utterance of My Name. Most of you won't have heard it, so by way of description it's kinda like Morton Feldman played by way of Merzbow. I made it using a variety of equipment not usually associated with compositional methods (a TV, DVD player, two mini-disc players and a CD player, along with a mixing desk and multi-effects).

It's exactly the kind of music that would find a comfortable home on Tzadik. Not wanting to put all my eggs in one basket, I want to have a list of other labels that might be show interest. Would those of you who are into this type of experimental composition mind suggesting suitable lables (preferably with some of their most well known artists and a contact address)?

I would appreciate it muchly.

off the top of my head..

Ochre records immediately springs to mind as a good home for vaguely homemade British experimental music.

There are always lots of small British labels that deal in this sort of thing listed or advertised in the back of The Wire..

Sorry for the lack of rock solid info.. obviously I hope your music does get to see the light of day, cos the oppurtunity to go out and buy it would certainly be a welcome one..

You could go down the CD-R label route, and over there we have Kabukikore who have a remix of Dreams of Tall Buildings (who's name I once read in Careless Talk Costs Lives) coing out soon. Or Authorised Version, the vanity project of Cheap Machines. Or there's Nidnod and Evelyn, both of whom have Karina ESP releases.

That said, yr selfish, food-hoarding capitalist pig claims of wanting a "decent" label, and the pathetic subtext behind this whole thread of "I want the music that I have made to actually be heard," which apart from making me want to vomit my anus, also lead me to believe that even looking without contempt at these labels may be about as helpful to yr quest to release stuff as slathering yr cock in highly conductive jelly and ramming it in a power supply would be.

Or you could try V/Vm, and you did once say you had Rephlex's address too.

Yes, try V/VM! The stuff their label releases is crazed and amazing! Although I think it might all be the work of two mysterious blokes who hate absolutely everyone in the world, so then again maybe not..

Yeah, fuck labels.

Cos god knows, there's nothing worse than a couple of guys who get together cos they know a lot of great musicians who haven't got the resourses to properly distribute their own stuff, so they put some cash aside from their dayjob wages and take out some adverts in magazines and print up a load of CDs to sell to people at gigs or through a website, and they get some good reviews but most of the stuff remains sitting around unsold in their flat and they lose all money they invested in it..

Those capitalist scumfucks, compromising people's artist vision!!

Chalk on the sidewalk, dude.

Only a DS9 quote will do for non-engaging psuedo-punk scum like you.

Seth: Go Blow A Goat.

Or if you can't find one - go find a label on your own.

And continue to perpetuate labels categorising and censoring you.

You've never been signed and never will.

You are a total loser fuckwit with no idea about the industry.

BMG and SONY have merged.

Do you really think a minor label's gonna give a toss about some eejit who doesn't know music well enough to know what label he's gearing towards?

Look at your CD collections dumbass - cos that's as close you're gonna come to achieving anything.

But is the goat consenting? I don't think you should bring goats in to this against their will, man.

Yeah like, self distribute and STICK IT TO THE MAN.

PM: have you got anything more intelligent to say on self-distribution than "DIY". 3 letters, dude. Not a great help. Not exactly bowled over with your knowledge of the industry so far to be honest. Just how much stuff have you put out on your own? How successful have you been?

What was that? Sounded like "none" and "not at all" - oh all right, thanks!

New to Barbelith are you, planetman?

Should probably have a little look around before you start acting like a fucking ten-year-old.

Perhaps you should have a crack at the board's posting etiquette guidelines. Particular the section titled "Why Did My Post Get Flamed?".

Seth, any chance of hearing your stuff mate?

Didn't he post a link to his band up a couple days ago?

How much is this like that?

This is nothing like the band. Hunting Lodge are rabid, retarded punk, totally chaotic and angular. We've got a split seven inch coming out later in the year with a band called Mugstar, but I should have the MP3s up on Soulseek before that. The single will be on Farm Girl records and available from the website, www.hunting-lodge.org.

The band's previous two CDs are already there for purchase with a couple of tracks for download, but they're with the previous drummer, and don't come within a million miles of the ridiculous energy we get out when we play live.

I Am The Utterance of My Name is eighty minutes long and made from a manipulated copy of Olivier Messaien's Oraison, along with other found sounds. It's quite creepy sounding, one to scare the shit out of yourself late at night. But really, my knowledge of the kind of experimental composition stuff with which this would find a home is embrionic at best. Perhaps this is one for Rothkoid...

Given that you don't play your stuff live, you'll probablly find that you'll get more success getting this out once Hunting Lodge makes a name for themselves (and possibly stop living in Southampton. I'm not really sure how much of a name you'll make getting kicked out of clubs for not being music... ), or by going down the CDR label route, where they have no overheads, really, and sell stuff shit cheap, and so could risk it on you.

Any word on editing it down to fit on puny human CDs yet?

Seth

No need. It fits to a CD, you just can't do it with Windows Media.

Dude, having got some Kabukikore releases now, I'd say yr stuff would be quite happy there, if you wana go down that route. That said, they seem to be holding Mugstar up, so maybe ask them if the label is staffed by arseheads before bothering.

(Incidently, I have somehow managed to come to the conclusion that putting out stuff by a band who's been on John Peel AND has a split single coming out with a band that I know the drummer in MUST mean that they're a real label and not at all anything to do with the word ametuer at all)
