Synchronicity?

Right. I just did a wierd short story thing last night/this morning that's here in creation, and this ISN'T FOR THE SAKE OF PIMPING IT IN HERE. Not that it's going to be easy to believe.

Right, shit this is wierd, in the short story there's something called the Omega Institute, i just sat and wrote it in an hour or so, off the top of my head, made the names of people, titles, places etc.

THEN, and here it is, i start reading a Grant Morrison interview about half an hour ago, and guess what the fuck i see?

Look :

"I get paid to do regular talks and summits on science, creativity, technology and magic all around the world and on TV and radio - next is at the Omega Institute, upstate New York, on the weekend of August 13-15 with Doug Rushkoff, Howard Bloom, Paul Lafolley and Richard Metzger."

Omega Institute! Fucking hell, watch out for the Monitors!!!

Shit, i know this is going to be hard to believe, but when i saw that it really fucked me up, and i'm still freaked. I rant about synchronicity a bit from time to time, or just comment when it happens, but ........no i don't know what to say.

Actually i think i'm going to put in a request to the mods for that story with a different name for that Institute, because that just feels a little TOO wierd.

Honestly : what the fuck is that all about?

Well... Omega Institute is a pretty obvious name. It's imposing and a bit sinister. IF your short story had a character called Captain Doug Rushkoff as well, I'd be impressed. As it is, this doesn't seem too coincidental to me. Do a search on "omega Institute" - you'll find there are Omega Institutes of Holistic Studies, Finance, Cosmetology...

Well it just freaked me out because i've never heard of an Omega Institute before and all of a sudden i'm reading that interview and there it was, it just freaked me out.

So should i keep it in the story? I've heard of Omega oils in Mackarel (that's a wrong spelling surely) and Omega Red, but no Institute before.

Oh well, i'm off back to da interview now, i didn't go to my NEW DEAL course today because i couldn't be arsed, fuck it.

I have SERIOUS stuff to do, like drawing and writing, and posting on barbelith, and looking at art in Millarworld.

fireman-dude - are you sure you haven't been to technoccult, disinfo, any o them kind of places in the past few weeks? the event has been trailed widely on yr countercyberculchur sites and newsletters and thing: your eyes may well have just strayed across those words at any such place and been buzzing around your misremembered head like half a favourite song ever since.

ms susan blackmore (bigged-up hard by geri morrison in invisibubbles 3/1 FACTFACT) has written at length about how spooky synchronicity and the like is often just not-very-unlikely events happening to people who have a poor understanding of how probablilty works and think that this mundane, quite predictable thing means the universe is talking through them. they is not magic, they be ignorums.

did you not know that? EVERYONE ELSE HERE knows that mate.

not really, but worth thinking about before you start going on about having another 'download' or whatever.

Omega Man. Charlton Heston. "I Am Legend". Vampires. Vampirella? Ahh... Greg Murchison. Tis All True. All true- ism? chrISMorrison. Chris Morris- The Gush. Geoff Merrydown- Anders Klimakks' black spunk. OMEGOD!!! (or "blimey!"... each works...)

Synchronicity's fine... except it's also the name of an album by The Police. "The Police"!!! geddit? I "Thought" so! Ahahahahah. The Empire never ended.

Just taking the piss, mate... as has I think already been said, a lot of coincidence and synchronicity is largely a result of us trying to find patterns in a godzillion's worth of experiences every day. NOT that that isn't a great way of learning how your own head's wired, mind you...

Nah, i've been learning CSS, going to Millarworld, coming here, learning CSS, going to Millarworld, co...you know. That's why it really freaked me out, i can safely say that i haven't seen Omega Institute anywhere else. It came like : the story is a freakout phase in the future, just as we make contact with loads of aliens instead of just one race and a lot of manipulators get sussed and thrown out of government after infiltrating it across the world, so i was thinking of the name and Omega just came into my head with it being the last symbol in whatever alphabet it's in, Greek i think?

Yeah, it could easily be ignorums, even when it happens though i don't think the 'verse is speaking through me, more of a 'wake up you idiot' type of thing. Maybe i should of read the interview earlier than i did or something, but i had to get Here Comes Tomorrow before i went near it, i'd already had enough spoilers. I love the way you speak Gambit, i really do. If Mike Robot takes over the world you should ask to remake the english dictionary.

No, it wasn't a download, mon chere, they are way more fun. Synchronicity is like looking and seeing the reflection of the water, whereas a download is like drinking some of it.

And Synchronicity is waaay to long a word, it hurts to type it, so much that the one in this sentence was copied and pasted from further up, i'm gonna start calling it synco or something.

Freaky I just read "I am Legend" last year!

Huh, i just said 'dowload' to Gambit. As if he needs any more reason to make me look silly.

Ok anyway, i get the fact that i got a litle over excited, less sugar for me tomorrow.

Oh. My. God.

"last year"?

"NOW WAIT FOR LAST YEAR"! A classic Philip K Dick novel. (The EMPIRE NEVER ENDED, dammit!!!) By the same bloke who wrote "VALIS". Valis, that ace trope (Gnostic source of knowledge inhabiting near-Earth space) later used by one Mr Gary Maupassant in comics, as...

BARBELITH!!!

umm... will you excuse me, please. I think I've just come.

Ok then, i should of said fun after the initial madness has passed.

No. Not in the slighest. Please spare us.

Spare you what? And not in the slightest?! Surely you've had fun from a download experience, if not why would you do it?

My downloads? I don't really post about them anymore and prefer to draw/write nowadays. (or learn to.) I can see your happy to be talking to me anyway, whats wrong man? I post rarely nowadays so don't worry about me. I'm hopefully learning from my mistakes, like erm, this thread even, it was just wierd and i'd not been up long.

Sorry Rob, I ws alluding to the fact that the word "omega" has it's origin as the last letter of greek alphabet, it's not just a name for oils. Because of it's placing in this alphabet, you get phrases like "alpha to omega" etc.

13:16 / 13.07.04
Oh God, here we go again.

Nah seriously, i'm not trying to be a twat anymore so i'll just say sorry and that i've requested that this whole thread be deleted.

Rob doesn't have final say on what happens with the threads he starts, but we should at least listen to his opinion...

What did you want to change the title to, Rob?
