I've always enjoyed the Dylan Thomas material that I've stumbled across over the years but I've never gone out of my way to track him down. With one exception. I'm an audio junkie so I've obviously listened, and re-listened, to 'Under Milk Wood'. But the other day I was browsing through the spoken word section of Waterstones and found the 'Dylan Thomas at the Beeb' C.D.
It opens with 'Return Journey to Swansea' in which the precociously talented 24 year old writer returns to his home town and wanders the streets looking for the town he grew up in. Dramatic reconsturctions represent his interactions with the people he met on his wanderings. And it's just wonderful. I was left with a strange feeling of nostalgia for a place I never knew, from a time before I was born...
Thomas might not be to everyones taste, and he's about as unhip these days as any poet could be, and he often lapsed into cliche, and his poetry is better suited to the spoken word than the written page. But I enjoyed it immensley and have since bought a collection of his poetry which did everything that a book of poetry should do.
So, I'm posting here in the off chance that there's anyone out there who's heard the damn thing and has an opinion on it. I'm posting it here because though it's a radio thang it's probably more likely to have be known to the readers of this board. If you nice mods know better then I'm sure you'll move it quicker than a suitable metaphor can be used in the right context. |
