Anyone else hear about this? I just got it yesterday at my friendly neighborhood comic store -- it's a classy production/package - 4 discs, 28 episodes and a few commentaries and behind-the-scenes thingies. I loved this series a lot and I'm so glad to see it getting collected on DVD. Apparently Volume Two will collect the remaining eps., since there was a full 1st season of Bats episodes but only like a 1/3 of a second season.

The Emmy-award winning Mr. Freeze ep "Heart of Ice" is on here, as well as the first appearances of all the big villains. The Two-Face two-parter is aces. I can't wait to have the Ra's al Ghul ep's on DVD and the Zatanna appearance (next season, I think)...the Robin origin ep is excellent as well. The one where they tell about the mechanic who makes the Batmobiles is also really cool.

Just need to say that I started watching these and they're really great - the commentaries are a lot of fun and the other behind-the-scenes stuff is fantastic! Highly recommended.

Now I want them to come out with the Superman Animated Series Box Set, and the Bayman Beyond Box Set...and if some company would put out Star Blazers on DVD, my life would be complete.

If anyone cares...pretty sad that I am replying to my own thread, which I only have posted the 3 posts of...but I figured someone must eventually care about the Batman animated series on DVD!

Saw this on All the Rage at www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com:

Paul Dini recently posted on an animated DCU message board:

>> Even though I have departed Termite Tower for the House of Mouse, I still get yanked back for the occasional special project. Just this week I did a bunch of new interviews and commentaries for the second Batman Animated DVD set, due out later this year. Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett, Glen Murakami, the Superman directors and I will also appear on a Superman Animated compilation released around that time, too.

>> Bruce and Glen reveal the stylistic differences between the Batman and Superman series while Alan talks about the challenges of writing a fresh yet iconic version of the Man of Steel, and I shriek out the name “Mxyzptlk!” now and then just to be annoying. For reasons unknown, I also pop up on the Wacky Races DVD boxed set, again out later this fall. Gotta love that Dastardly and Muttley.

>> Between Superman commentary sessions, Bruce and Justice League director Dan Riba told me that the last JLU episode I scripted was back from animation and looking great. I’m not sure exactly when it will be airing, though it was number five or six on the production slate this season, so I’m guessing around the end of August. Batman and Zatanna literally travel to Hell and back to save Wonder Woman from Circe. Special guest appearance by B’wana Beast. No seriously, B’wana Beast!

I've kind of been waiting for a box set of all these to come out before I pick them up (Batman: TAS, New Adventures of Batman & Robin, Batman Beyond, all the animated movies) but I've yet to hear anything.

You'll probably have to wait many years before that kind of huge, comprehensive box set comes out...they seem to be coming out with maybe 1 or 2 collections a year of the Batman stuff, and the Batman animated series had something like 64 ep's...? So it'll probably be 3 boxed sets of all the just-original-Batman animated ep's, then 2 boxed sets of all the Superman animated ep's, then maybe 1 box set of all the Batman Beyond ep's. The movies will all be sold separately, I'd imagine. So a collection of all those collections would have to be pretty darn big indeed.

Very psyched about this. I found the first season used at my local music shoppe and enjoy it immensely, especially the "pilot" or pitch episode shown during the documentary.

While it admittedly does not have some of the rabble rousers of season two, season one does have POV, Joker's Favor, Christmas with the Joker (which I'm learning not to hate), Beware the Grey Ghost (with Adam West as Bruce's fallem actor mentor), the excellent Mad as Hatter and Clayface two-parter Feat of Clay (the end scene with Clayface going through his previous roles is astounding).

I'm a big Dini/Timm fan in general so I'm equally excited over Superman and Batman finally making it onto DVD... now I can ditch those tapes and bootlegs.

Vol. 2 is out - good stuff all around. I'm not sure if there's a Ra's al Ghul ep. on here, though. Vol. 3 is going to have all the slickest, coolest (most recent) stuff.

The Superman Vol. 1 set is now out.

And the Ra's al Ghul/Jonah Hex isn't in Bats Vol. 2. But you get some other nice commentaries on ep's like "Robin's Reckoning," "Almost Got 'Im," "Harley And Ivy"...plus, the Zatanna ep and some other really good ones.

Vol. 3 will have all the kickass 'modern' stuff...

Batman: The Animated Series - More Batman:TAS swings into action just before Batman Begins

2/23/2005

Gotham City crime czars Scarface and Rupert Thorne battle evil masterminds like the Joker and the Penguin for money, power and respect. Kidnappings rise as foe-versus-foe attacks become more vindictive. And just when you thought you knew the good guys from the bad, the craziest villains try to go straight, triggering one dangerous blowout after another. Amidst all the terror one man walks the fine line between vengeance and justice as often as he balances his crimefighting persona and his billionaire playboy public life. This is the Batman series that introduced a new kind of super hero - cool, composed, uncompromising. Your Batman collection won't be complete without this compilation!

Batman will be performing double-duty on May 24 when he appears in SuperFriends Season 2 and Batman: The Animated Series Volume 3! This release is timed to coincide with the 6/17 theatrical release of Batman Begins starring Christian Bale in the title role, and a wonderful list of supporting actors including Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Katie Holmes, Rutger Hauer and Ken Watanabe.

Fans of the previous releases know what to expect with Volume 3; Full Frame (1:33:1) video, English, French and Spanish Dolby Stereo Surround audio tracks, and matching subtitles. The 4 disc set has a running time of 609 mins, though we expect that to be an error since there are 29 episodes left, and previous sets ran 624 and 625 mins long, and contained 28 episodes.

We've compiled a list of the missing episodes and guessed at the order in which they may appear, based on the previous 2 releases:

557 Shadow of the Bat
561 Shadow of the Bat, Part II
558 Blind as a Bat
559 The Demon's Quest
563 The Demon's Quest, Part II
560 His Silicon Soul
562 Fire From Olympus
564 Read My Lips
565 The Worry Men
566 Sideshow
567 A Bullet for Bullock
568 Trial
569 Avatar
570 House And Garden
571 The Terrible Trio
572 Harlequinade
573 Time Out of Joint
574 Catwalk
575 Bane
576 Baby-Doll
577 The Lion & the Unicorn
578 Showdown
579 Riddler's Reform
580 Second Chance
581 Harley's Holiday
582 Lock-Up
583 Make 'Em Laugh
584 Deep Freeze
585 Batgirl Returns

The previous sets have been placed in production order (the 5xx number), except where 2-part episodes occur.

The set also sports some bonus features:

Commentary on "Read my Lips" by Producer, Bruce Timm; Writer, Paul Dini; Director, Boyd Kirkland; Writer, Michael Reaves; and Composer, Shirley Walker

Video Commentary on "House and Garden" by Producer, Bruce Timm; Writer, Paul Dini; Director, Boyd Kirkland; and Moderator, Jason Hillhouse

Commentary on "Harlequinade" by Producer Bruce Timm; Writer, Paul Dini; and Composer, Shirley Walker

Turns out there will also be a new Superman animated series based partly on the old Bruce Timm designs to coincide with the new Supes movie:

>> SAN DIEGO -- The Batman and Superman are both getting straight-to-video movies, it was revealed Friday at the Justice League Unlimited/The Batman panel at Comic-Con International.

The Batman movie is the previously announced The Batman vs. Dracula. The first act of the movie was shown, including an apparently deadly confrontation between Batman and The Joker and Penguin's unwitting resurrection of Dracula.

The Superman movie will be timed for the release of the Superman Returns movie.

Duane Capizzi, supervising producer of The Batman television series, is writing both films.

"With Superman, I kind of fell into this project and boy, I've really grown to love him," Capizzi said. "It's a story where Superman is really driven by his passions. And it's sort of the Seven Labors of Hercules, where he literally goes to the ends of the Earth -- and then some -- to rescue somebody very important to him."

Designs from the Superman animated series will be used, along with new ones, and Capizzi said most of the voice cast will be back.

"But it's sort of a standalone movie," he said. "It's not meant to be a sequel to the last episode."

I've been putting off and putting off buying these for two reasons - one, money isn't in abundence at present and two, I vowed not to buy any DVD's anymore. But, damned, Amazon are selling them cheap, and they look so good.

Oh and FinderWolf, don't ever stop writing about them.

they are good, Benny - I'd say pick 'em up when your finances are a little stronger. Very very worth it. And they damn well better start releasing Batman Beyond and Justice League in similar boxed sets! The new Batman series is bad so I don't care about that one.

12:51 / 26.08.05
Well, Finder, I got spanked for asking this in Conversation, so I come to you pleading for information! Plz hlp!

I've heard the episodes on the Batman dvd set are not exactly in chronological order; while not many of the episodes seemed to demand it (except for the multi-parters), this could seem kind of silly if Robin is showing up at the begining of the set and not at the end. Any truth to this? I don't see why this would have been brought up if it doesn't become an issue at at least a couple of points.

FinderWolf
18:58 / 26.08.05
They seem to be in the order the creators wanted them to be seen in -- airing order is probably another matter. But Bats is solo in many episodes, even after they introduced Robin - sometimes it's just cool to have a Bats solo story, doesn't mean the ep. has to be before Robin was introduced.

I haven't noticed anything glaring watching, nor have I heard this concern before. Anyone else...?

Are Being Stolen By Bandits
22:33 / 27.08.05
As far as I understand it, the DVDs present the episodes in 'production' order, rather than the order in which they originally aired. The networks, for some bizarre reason, screwed the running-order for several episodes right up - two-parters screened many weeks apart, characters appearing in episodes before their 'introductory' stories had aired, that sort of thing. The DVD order is the one to watch them in.

Vol. 2 of the Superman box sets has just been announced:

>> Superman: The Animated Series will be released on December 6th!

>> With a SRP of $26.99, this 2 disc release will include the next 18 episodes, including commentaries on "Brave New Metropolis" [the one where Supes takes over the world wearing a psuedo-Nazi-SS logo on his chest in an alternate future, this is a hardcore ep. - Finder] and "World's Finest Part I" [the terrific Supes/Bats team-up, which was excellent - Finder again.].

Now they have to announce the next set of Batman DVDs (the 'season 2' 'new look' version of the show, when they got rid of the yellow oval around Bats' chest...)

FinderWolf
16:43 / 29.08.05
OK, found this elsewhere on the Net: (Bat without yellow oval episodes GO!)

>> Warner Home Video as announced a Dec. 6 release date for Batman: The Animated Series Vol. 4 .

Here¹s how Warner Bros. describes the Batman set:

"In the hit show that continues the Batman storyline from the Emmy-winning Batman: The Animated Series, two years have passed and Batman still protects the streets of Gotham City from the demented criminals that inhabit its dark alleys. But irreconcilable differences with Dick Grayson lead to the collapse of the Batman/Robin crimefighting duo and to the birth of Gotham's new hero Nightwing. Batgirl fights at Batman's side, and a new Robin takes flight after Batman's chance encounter with young Tim Drake. In these 24 thrilling episodes, the Gotham Knights face their worst enemies - Joker, Penguin, Mr. Freeze and many more - in a comprehensive 4-disc set that completes the Batman animated saga!"

Episodes include:

Disc 1: "Holiday Knights," "Sins of the Father," "Cold Comfort," "Double Talk," "You Scratch My Back" and "Never Fear."

Disc 2: "Joker¹s Millions," "Growing Pains," "Love is a Croc," "Torch Song," "The Ultimate Thrill" and "Over the Edge."

Disc 3: "Mean Seasons," "Critters," "Cult of the Cat," "Animal Act," "Old Wounds" and "The Demon Within."

Disc 4: "Legends of the Dark Knight," "Girls¹ Nite Out," "Mad Love," "Chemistry," "Beware the Creeper" and "Judgement Day." 4 - 19 Legends of the Dark Knight

There will be audio commentary on "Over the Edge", "Critters" and "Legends of the Dark Knight" by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Glen Murakami, James Tucker, Dan Riba and Moderator Jason Hillhouse.

The featurette is Arkham's Finest: Inside Batman's Rogue Gallery.

I thought the new look episodes were not nearly as good as the earlier episodes. The redesigns, particularly for the women were like someone aping Timm's design without knowing why they worked. The women all had the tiny wastes and strangely shaped heads. The Joker also had a shite design, not nearly as creepy as his earlier design. Strangely enough, those same designs work much better in JLU then they ever did in their own series.

The stories were also not as good, though there were a couple, particularly the one where Barbara Gordon is doused with fear toxin and imagines her death forcing her father to launch a full scale assault on Batman.

FinderWolf
17:16 / 30.08.05
I agree about the women designs being a bit weaker, and at first I felt the same way about the new Joker design...but then it kind of grew on me. However, they reverted to something more like the original Joker design (no black eyes with white pupils) for JL and JLU, I believe.

X-Himy
18:57 / 30.08.05
I felt that the original joker design was more frightening, it looked like a man that had been twisted. The later design was more some sort of generic ghoul. The JL/U design was a synthesis of the two I guess.

I will admit that there were a couple of designs that were okay. I have a fondness for the redesigned Scarecrow, but that is tempered by my dislike of it. The character is this weak little man who plays with others minds, and I liked that he would dress up as a Scarecrow to further that. The redesign is certainly cool, but more as an animated version of the Hanging Man character from Astro City. As Scarecrow, it shows too much power for such a physically weak character.

The Penguin redesign was closer to comics, but I always liked the Danny Devito/Batman Returns character that the original design was based on.

02:24 / 09.12.05
OK, so the Paul Dini/Bruce Timm/Alan Burnett Batman animated Vol. 4 - the first season with the yellow oval gone - is out, as is Vol. 2 of the Superman animated series. I guess they're stretching out the Supes series to make it into 3 DVD sets, since Vol. 2 doesn't seem to have the big series ender with Darkseid and Supes going toe to toe in a big way.

And now, the big news is that Batman Beyond will get its first box set collection - and so will the first season of Justice League! Yay!

I love these shows. Although Batman Beyond was great and often had more depth than you would expect (specifically in the treatment of the Bruce/Terry relationship), it's the Justice League DVD set I'm really psyched for.

I know it's my job to keep this thread alive (and the Kyle Baker Plastic Man thread in the Comics forum, until it gets cancelled in a month anyway), so here goes:
