Linen suits

It's summer and, since I no longer live in Scotland, there's an odds-on chance of light and warmth. Conscious that my work wardrobe consisted almost entirely of dark or dark-pinstriped suits, I recently impulse-bought two cream/beige suits, one for 'good' in a fine linen, and one everyday one in a coarser weave.

Wearing them with open-necked white, pink or stripey shirts makes me feel slightly akin to an ice-cream salesman, and occasionally elicits 'Man from Del Monte' comparisons from work colleagues.

Feels nice, but a little too casual for power-dressy occasions (when I'm heading the ward round, say). Do people reckon it's a doable look, or is it likely I look like I'm auditioning for a Mellow Birds advert? Also, to get anal-retentively GQ for a moment, what's the etiquette on footwear? Sockless, I'm sure, but what about sandals? They feel okay with the heavier, more crumply-linen suit, but not the finer one.

Are sandalls ever acceptable for british men to wear?

You tell me.

I haven't gone for the full linen suit but I have bought a beige linen suit jacket (or "blazer", if you will, but I'd rather not) from Zara which looks fab with jeans and leather mules. I think sandals with a beige linen suit would be spot on.

not wearing socks with shoes only works if the shoes are sandals - otherwise your feet will be destroyed.

i wear a vest under my shirt every day by the way.

for a while, similar aged boys laughed. they soon followed suit, however.

and sandals - yeah, they work.

I have a charcoal grey Dries van Noten linen suit that I'm inordinately proud of. I find the best footwear to wear with it is a pair of black Nike dunks (the limited edition ones with a mixture of black suede and black leather, and the gum sole). White dunks work okay too, and cream converse or pro-keds are acceptable, if you don't mind treading on the back of your trews.

I think a sandal and suit combo is a bit much meself. I'd be more tempted (horror!) to go with a pair of top-stitched loafers (so unfashionable, they MUST be due for a revival). And actually, I think a pair of the lighter coloured desert boots would also go a treat with a cream linen suit.

I never think sandals are acceptable, I'm really only here because I had to share this site with you: How to be a smooth operator this Summer when traveling on business.

Weighing in from the sub-tropics: sandals with a suit, even a linen one, seems really odd to me. Loafers and docksiders without socks are pretty much a Palm Beach uniform, though.

Ahhh, but I work in an office replete with social workers. They all think I'm incredibly cool because I don't wear socks with mine.

I'm still convinced on the sandals, although perhaps we need a fuller description, mayhap e'en an illustration, to win over the other doubters (Anna, I'm surprised at your conservatism, here).

I'd go with yr instincts, nesh. Sandals and suit is fine (and as you say, in yr environment, practically compulsory). Good qual leather sandals with good qual heavy linen suit: yes. Can look v.classic/stylish.

Any quality dip: no.

Or, converses, but prolly too scruffy for yr office. But converses & suit=mm=mmmm

Buuuuuut, make sure you've got decent toenails before you get 'em out. Pedicure/trim/file(polish) please.

Sax: Anna's biased about these things...

Jefe: do you have to talk about yr DVN suit? *sobs*

As i always used to say to my mum when she'd cook some bizarre combination like sausages with marmalade:

"experimentation has boundaries"

Sandals with a suit is one of them.

no, no, no. It can work. Very well.

Suit needs to be loosely-tailored, mind. Or loose nehru style, looks faaaab*.

And we're talking an NHS env. here, Jefe, the Rules are Different.

Anna's link is priceless, by the way.

You'll all mock me mercilessly for this, but my executive travel kit contains (mostly from 4VOO):

- Dynamic lift cream
- Lipid lip enhancer
- Indelible eyeshadow (brown, and very subtle)
- "Fresh eyes" eyedrops

Because having the equipment to disguise a killer hangover is essential...

And Bengali - come visit me in singapore and I'll let you borrow it...

The more I think about Ganesh's footwear dilemma, the more I'm convinced that these:

are the answer. If they're kept nice and clean.

Yo, Bengali, while we're talking Indian related fashion tips - I bought two sets of Kurta Pajamas recently - one white see-thru one with gold threads in it and a cream embroidered one. Can you think of any good occasions on which to wear them?

ooh, i like those, Jefe, qu'est-ce que? look like a good solution....

Hey, would *love* to come visit you, don't need bribing with suits. tho it's a nice sweetner.

how about:

these, only with a loose/unstructured trousered-suit, mind. Which i suspect is not what nesh has...

Jefe: nice, can we see pix?

hmm. will have a think, and actually, chat to my (white) bro-in-law and see where he wears his. (I know he doesn't wear his black/gold set much!)

The plainer one, with converses/monochrome trainers, would make excellent dinner party/smart dining wear, i think.

The doubleplus one? could make excellent wedding/ultra formalwear? with decent shoes?

The shoes are pro-keds...

Bengali: Yes, the Sax pins have seen three-quarter length action this summer. Pair of linen three-quarters, actually, in a darker beige, very informal and loose, from Muji.

Can I ask about the lift cream? Is it for your eyes?

I don't like shoes that show off toes- I think they're inelegant. Also sandal days on the tube make me feel ill, most people just don't look after their feet. I mean what is with short footed women wearing mules... christ love you want to lengthen your feet, not make them look dumpy. Then there was the lady the other day with blood blisters on her heels and the man with horribly wide birkenstocks (with no design features) so they were just nasty, old shoes and *shudder* flip-flops in the city? The grime! The grime!

Anything too trainer-like just seems too undoctorly scruffy for everyday wear (although those are nice, Jefe). I've taken to wearing the heavier linen suit with sockless sandals (which are plain brown two-strap Birkenstocks); the finer, more ice-creamy one's better with plain brown brogues or loafers.

Ewwwwww.

I just imagined having a diagnosis from a doctor and looking at his knobbly hairy feet with cracked toes and discoloured nails peeping out of his sandals.

Thanks for that image Ganesh and Anna...

Well, depending on the diagnosis, it might not be uppermost in your mind, Mr FragrantFeet. Besides, mine are lo-o-ovely.

Despite being guilty of it myself I don't think sandals have any place in the work place or near suits.
I've worn them in the workplace before and I always have a nagging doubt the health and safety officer will nab me for something. Even in an office.
Suits and sandals just conjures up all sorts of early nineties post-grunge fashions that were injected into the high street.
But I guess if you have beautiful feet you should really go bare.

Back to alternatives:
Black Converse with the red band look smart enough to work in but good luck finding any. They don't look as good without the red band but that could just be personal preference.
Office do all manner of lightweight shoes at the moment but whether you'd like any of them is debatable. I sort of do but not enough to actually buy any.
For a nice, flat, lightweight shoe try Swear in Covent Garden or Carnaby street. They can be a little pricey though.

But so pretty with their mock-lotus shoes and the patchy leather. Yum, yum, yum.
