It's summer and, since I no longer live in Scotland, there's an odds-on chance of light and warmth. Conscious that my work wardrobe consisted almost entirely of dark or dark-pinstriped suits, I recently impulse-bought two cream/beige suits, one for 'good' in a fine linen, and one everyday one in a coarser weave.
Wearing them with open-necked white, pink or stripey shirts makes me feel slightly akin to an ice-cream salesman, and occasionally elicits 'Man from Del Monte' comparisons from work colleagues.
Feels nice, but a little too casual for power-dressy occasions (when I'm heading the ward round, say). Do people reckon it's a doable look, or is it likely I look like I'm auditioning for a Mellow Birds advert? Also, to get anal-retentively GQ for a moment, what's the etiquette on footwear? Sockless, I'm sure, but what about sandals? They feel okay with the heavier, more crumply-linen suit, but not the finer one. |
