Harrison Birtwhistle's "Io Passion"

Coulda gone in Music, I guess, being an opera and all, but what most impressed me was the staging and narrative structure.

Overall, strangely enough, what Io Passion reminded me of most was Lynch's Lost Highway, except with tropes from Greek myth rather than film noir.

Most of the action, such as it is, consists of a guy waiting under a streetlight and posting a letter through a letterbox. On the other side of the letterbox (and the other side of the stage- each character is "doubled up" through the window so you see both sides at once) is a woman with whom, we can gather, he had a relationship until they went to Greece, at which point "something" manifested itself.

That "something" was, of course, the story of Io and Zeus, which appears in dream sequences.

The music's excellent, of course- juddery strings and a lead clarinet, plus vocals- but the story unfolds pretty fucking interestingly.

Particularly well-done is a scene where ANOTHER couple turn up, each couple using bits and pieces from each other's arguments to fuel their own, and egging on the others.

It's very dark, occasionally funny, and overall very good. I thoroughly recommend it.
