EGO WORLD
EPISODE 1

12 Page Script
By: Ben Christensen

June 14th, 2004

PAGE 1 (5 Panels)
-PANEL ONE:
A planet in space. It looks very similar to Earth and has five moons.

CAPTION: EGO WORLD.

CAPTION: IT’S BEEN AROUND FOR A THOUSAND YEARS. OUR PARENTS CAME HERE, SOMEDAY OUR CHILDREN WILL COME HERE.

-PANEL TWO: On the surface, construction crews are building a massive city.

CAPTION: IT WAS BUILT TO HOUSE THE CHILDREN OF SOCIETY. AN ATTEMPT TO END THE DELINQUENT IMPULSES RAGING THROUGH OUR YOUTH CULTURE.

-PANEL THREE: A long line of kids are standing in a sterile room. Each of them is wearing the same uniform of citizenship. They are a varied set of races and sexes.

CAPTION: KIDS ARE SENT HERE TO GET THE BAD THINGS OUT OF THEIR SYSTEM, RETURNING TO EARTH SOCIETY AS WELL-ADJUSTED YOUTHS.

CAPTION: THEY IMPLANT US WITH A “GUARDIAN”, A DEVICE THAT TELLS THEM WHAT WE’VE DONE, SUBTRACTING POINTS FROM OUR PERMITTED TOTAL.

-PANEL FOUR: The finished Ego World, full of kids doing this delinquent act or that delinquent act.

CAPTION: ON EGO WORLD, WE’RE ALLOWED TO DO ANYTHING. WE’RE ENCOURAGED TO DO ANYTHING.

CAPTION: MOST KIDS REVEL IN IT. WITH ONLY THREE MONTHS ON WORLD, IT WOULD BE A WASTE NOT TO ACT OUT.

-PANEL FIVE: A street corner with kids all over the place. A teen in the center of the frame erupts in light as he is transported off world.

CAPTION: THREE MONTHS OR THREE MILLION POINTS, EITHER RUNS OUT AND YOUR TELEPORTED OFF WORLD, BACK TO EARTH SOCIETY.

CAPTION: IF I HAD MY WAY I’D NEVER GO BACK.

PAGE 2 (6 Panels)
-PANEL ONE:
Establishing shot of the city, it’s midday. Domes and small buildings lead up to large apartment complexes. All sorts of things fly around the air: Starships, robots, jets, winged ponies, super-heroes, biplanes, even floating tigers.

CAPTION: MY NAME IS SHELLE. I HAVE FIVE THOUSAND POINTS LEFT.

-PANEL TWO: Tighter on one of the apartment buildings.

COMPUTER: AFFECTIONATE PHYSICAL CONTACT. MINUS TEN POINTS.

CAPTION: AND THEY’RE GOING FAST.

-PANEL THREE: Inside one of the apartments two kids are making out on a bed. The boy, DUO, has spiked green hair and tinted glasses. The girl, SHELLE, has bright orange hair and a number of piercings on her face. Clothes and other teenage junk clutter the room. An exotic cane rests against the wall near the bed.

COMPUTER: AFFECTIONATE PHYSICAL CONTACT. MINUS TEN POINTS.

-PANEL FOUR: Tighter on the kids as they stop kissing.

DUO: DO YOU THINK I’M WORTH IT?

SHELLE: I WOULDN’T BE HERE IF I DIDN’T.

-PANEL FIVE: Close up as DUO stares into SHELLE’s eyes.

DUO: I KNOW, IT’S JUST...

DUO: SHELLE, I LOVE YOU.

-PANEL SIX: Same panel. SHELLE gets off the bed, grabbing the cane. DUO looks at her confused.

SHELLE: I... I HAVE TO GO.

DUO: CAN’T I SAY I LOVE YOU?

SHELLE: EGO’S NOT ABOUT THAT. LOVE AND COMMITMENT, THOSE ARE EARTH IDEAS.

SHELLE: HERE IT’S ABOUT PASSION AND EXCITEMENT. LOVE JUST GETS IN THE WAY.

PAGE 3 (6 Panels)
-PANEL ONE:
SHELLE hits a switch on the cane, activating a change in clothing. A circle of energy surrounds her body changing SHELLE’s top half and working it’s way down. SHELLE’s hair gets longer, it’s now black with blue tips. Her clothing becomes a mix of cloth and leather. Everything is covered on her body, but it looks meaner than teens of our generation. DUO is starting to get mad.

SFX: FZZZZZZZZZ

DUO: THAT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE!

SHELLE: YES IT DOES. WE’RE HERE TO REBEL EARTH, NOT CONFORM TO IT.

-PANEL TWO: DUO is getting really pissed off. SHELLE walks to the bed, looking at DUO with a smile on her face. Behind her we can see a row of windows showing Ego World.

SHELLE: ARE YOU A CONFORMIST?

DUO: NO, BUT YOU'RE A SLUT.

-PANEL THREE: Angle on SHELLE as she takes a step back, she’s shocked by what he said. DUO gets off the bed.

SHELLE: THAT WAS UNCALLED FOR.

DUO: YEAH, BUT IT FITS.

-PANEL FOUR: DUO pushes SHELLE out the window. The glass ripples around her, letting her body pass through. SHELLE is caught completely off guard.

DUO: NOW GET THE HELL OUT.

SHELLE: HEY! HEY!

-PANEL FIVE: Outside the window, SHELLE is hovering in mid air.

COMPUTER: PERSONAL HOVER ACTIVATED.

SHELLE: bastard.

-PANEL SIX: Same panel. SHELLE flies away.

SHELLE: I WAS LEAVING ANYWAY.

PAGE 4 (5 Panels)
-PANEL ONE:
Establishing shot of some kids by a set of futuristic vending machines. Three kids stand out in the foreground of the image, there are two boys and a girl, each wearing unique outfits of varied designs. These are SHELLE’s friends KACE, RANK, and ASH respectively. They huddle around a shorter person we can’t see clearly.

KACE: SHE AIN’T GOING TO BE HAPPY ABOUT THIS, RANK.

RANK: I KNOW. I KNOW.

ASH: SHUT UP, HERE SHE COMES.

-PANEL TWO: Same panel. SHELLE floats down into frame, landing by her friends. She attaches her cane to her belt, letting it hang at her side.

RANK: HOLA SHELLE.

SHELLE: YOU GUYS SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE GUY I JUST MADE OUT WITH. HE GOT ALL ATTACHED AFTERWARD.

SHELLE: HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND THE FIRST RULE OF EGO. NOTHING MATTERS HERE.

-PANEL THREE: Close up on SHELLE as her friends part, showing her the off panel person. She’s taken aback.

SHELLE: oooh crap.

-PANEL FOUR: Reverse angle to show a younger boy looking up at SHELLE. The kid, VID, is only thirteen or fourteen and his clothes reflect the extreme of design for that age group. By the standards of SHELLE and her friends, his clothes are tame.

SHELLE: HELLO, VID. WHEN DID YOU GET ON WORLD?

VID: GOT DROPPED OFF THIS MORNING, CAME STRAIGHT HERE LOOKING FOR YOU.

SHELLE: WHY?

-PANEL FIVE: SHELLE walks past VID to one of the vending machines, placing her hand on a panel to activate it.

VID: I SEEK REVENGE.

SHELLE: FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, DON’T YOU HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO?

MACHINE: IDENTITY RECOGNIZED, ROSHELLE ONSGARD.

SHELLE: I KNOW WHO I AM, JUST GIVE ME THE FOOD.

PAGE 5 (6 Panels)
-PANEL ONE:
SHELLE starts to eat a slice of pizza while VID continues.

VID: LAST TIME I WAS ON EGO, ROSHELLE HERE SCREWED WITH MY IMAGING CONTROLS. MADE ME APPEAR NAKED IN FRONT OF A FEW THOUSAND PEOPLE.

-PANEL TWO: KACE, RANK, and ASH are laughing while VID screams at them. In the background, a kid with a metal baseball bat hits a random kid.

RANK: THAT WAS FUNNY AS HELL.

ASH: YEAH.

VID: SHUT UP!

-PANEL THREE: The kid with the bat runs into frame, hitting SHELLE in the back. She recoils in pain, dropping her slice of pizza.

KID: spend ‘em all. gotta spend ‘em all.

SFX: THUNK!

SHELLE: OWW!!

KID’S COMPUTER: AGGRESSIVE PHYSICAL CONTACT. MINUS A HUNDRED POINTS. WARNING: YOUR POINT TOTAL IS EXTREMELY LOW.

-PANEL FOUR: Angle on the kid as he continues, hitting another random kid as he goes.

KID: gotta spend ‘em all.

SFX: TONK!

KID’S COMPUTER: WARNING: ALL POINTS HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED.

-PANEL FIVE: Same panel. The kid finally stops, dropping the bat and throwing his hands into the air. He screams out in joy.

KID: YEEESSS!!!

KID’S COMPUTER: PREPARE FOR DEPARTURE.

-PANEL SIX: Same panel. In a burst of light, the kid vanishes. SHELLE and VID walk into the frame. SHELLE is rubbing her back.

KID’S COMPUTER: DEPARTURE ACTIVATED.

SFX: VREEEEEE

KID: NEW RECORD TIME!!

SHELLE: FRICKIN’ BURN OUTS.

PAGE 6 (5 Panels)
-PANEL ONE:
VID and SHELLE face off again.

VID: WHERE WAS I?

VID: OH YEAH, THAT LITTLE JOKE HURT ME, ROSHELLE. NOW I INTEND TO HURT YOU.

-PANEL TWO: Angle on VID as he holds up a computer disc and smiles.

VID: YOU SEE THIS DISC? THIS LITTLE PIECE OF PLASTIC? IT HOLDS OVER A HUNDRED IMAGES. ALL OF YOU, ROSHELLE.

VID: IMAGES OF YOU... OFF WORLD.

-PANEL THREE: Close up on SHELLE, she is really pissed off.

SHELLE: YOU LITTLE TURD.

-PANEL FOUR: SHELLE gets right into VID’s face. He is perfectly calm.

VID: ALL I HAVE TO DO IS UPLOAD THIS BABY IN THE PUBLIC IMAGE SERVER AND YOU’LL BE AS EXPOSED AS I WAS.

SHELLE: NOT IF I KICK YOUR ASS FIRST.

-PANEL FIVE: VID makes a run for it. SHELLE and her friends can’t react fast enough.

VID: PREDICTABLE.

SHELLE: HEY!!

KACE: GET HIM!

PAGE 7 (4 Panels)
-PANEL ONE:
VID is running down a sidewalk, navigating through the people. SHELLE and her friends are following as best they can.

-PANEL TWO: SHELLE slams into someone as she runs. VID looks back and laughs.

PERSON: HEY, WATCH IT!

COMPUTER: AGGRESSIVE PHYSICAL CONTACT. MINUS A HUNDRED POINTS.

VID: ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO CHASE ME, ROSHELLE?

VID: IS IT WORTH THE COST?

-PANEL THREE: SHELLE starts to fly horizontally towards VID, gaining ground on the teen. They’re both heading toward a long set of tinted windows which line the ground floor of an exotic looking building.

SHELLE: YES!

COMPUTER: PERSONAL HOVER ACTIVATED.

VID: BUT YOU’VE BEEN HERE LONGER. I’VE GOT MILLIONS OF POINTS TO SPARE.

VID: I CAN STRETCH THIS OUT FOR DAYS.

-PANEL FOUR: SHELLE flies into VID, knocking both of them through one of the windows in front of them.

SHELLE: BUT I WON’T LET YOU.

SFX: KRARASH!!

COMPUTER: DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY, MINUS TWENTY-FIVE POINTS.

PAGE 8 (5 Panels)
-PANEL ONE:
Establishing shot, we’re in a gigantic rave/club area. The room is dark with lasers and bursts of light flashing all over. Kids dance in mass, hundreds of them fill the room. A shaft of light from the broken window shines in showing VID and SHELLE as they both get up from the fall. None of the ravers seem to notice, they’re too into the music.

VID: ow.

SHELLE: GET UP. IF YOU THINK YOU’RE SOME KIND OF BIG MAN, PROVE IT!

-PANEL TWO: Angle on SHELLE. Her friends step through the broken window behind her. VID stands half off panel, looking at them.

VID: SCARED, ROSHELLE? AFRAID TO LET YOUR FRIENDS SEE THE REAL YOU?

-PANEL THREE: Same panel. Tighter on SHELLE as removes her cane from her belt, hitting a control button. Her appearance changes again, she now has red hair with red leather pads on her shoulders and legs.

SFX: FZZZZZZZZZ

SHELLE: THIS IS THE REAL ME.

-PANEL FOUR: SHELLE swings her cane at VID’s head, he blocks the hit.

COMPUTER: AGGRESSIVE PHYSICAL CONTACT. MINUS A HUNDRED POINTS.

VID: JUST KEEP TELLING YOURSELF THAT.

-PANEL FIVE: VID punches SHELLE, missing her entirely.

NO COPY

SHELLE: SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T EXIST HERE.

SFX: -SNAP!-

COMPUTER: DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY. MINUS TWENTY-FIVE POINTS.

PAGE 10 (6 Panels)

As SHELLE stands over VID, enjoying her success, he grabs a small sphere from one of the ravers.

SHELLE: YOUR LITTLE PLAN IS OVER.

-PANEL TWO: VID squeezes the ball, making it flash a bright light at SHELLE’s face. Our heroine recoils in pain as she’s temporally blinded. SHELLE drops her cane.

VID: WE’LL SEE.

SFX: -click-

SHELLE: AAAHHH!!!

-PANEL THREE: Wide shot of SHELLE as she tries to regain her sight. VID calmly steps over and picks up her cane. Some of the ravers around them have finally started to take notice, watching the conflict unfold.

VID: WHAT NOW, ROSHELLE? WHAT SHOULD I DO TO YOU NOW?

-PANEL FOUR: Same panel. VID swings the cane at SHELLE’s leg, breaking her bone.

SFX: WHAPP!

SHELLE: AAAIIIEEE!!!

COMPUTER: AGGRESSIVE PHYSICAL CONTACT. MINUS A HUNDRED POINTS.

-PANEL FIVE: VID watches as SHELLE drops to the ground in pain.

VID: DO YOU KNOW I COULD BEAT YOU TO WITHIN AN INCH OF YOUR LIFE AND NOBODY WOULD STOP ME?

VID: SURE, THEY’D TELEPORT YOU OUT BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY DIED, BUT THAT COULD TAKE A VERY LONG TIME.

-PANEL SIX: Close up as VID breaks the cane over his knee. Sparks fly everywhere.

VID: I WANT SOMETHING FASTER.

SFX: -SNAP!-

COMPUTER: DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY. MINUS TWENTY-FIVE POINTS.

PAGE 11 (6 Panels)

-PANEL FOUR: All three of her friends turn away.

SHELLE: ASH? -urg- KACE?

SHELLE: r-rank?

VID: I’M SORRY. THIS ISN’T WHAT I WANTED.

SHELLE: NO.

SHELLE: WHAT YOU WANTED WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.

-PANEL SEVEN: Same panel. VID and SHELLE step through the window.

VID: ARE YOU GOING TO TELL MOM AND DAD?

SHELLE: NO, LITTLE BROTHER.

SHELLE: THEY WOULDN’T UNDERSTAND, NOT ANYMORE.

We likes. Myself, when I write a script, I tend to give more specific directions to the artist, down to layout and panel composition, but that's in part because I'm also an artist, and something of a control freak, but I temper that by being open to any better ideas the artist may come up with.

As I was reading this I thought it would be an ideal match for an artistic style like that of Alan Davis, or maybe Paul Pope. When you're looking at prospective artists you may wish to bear that in mind. Of course, if you've got a different image of the art, more power to you.

Way-ull, I don't really see the point in the first page. It's stripped any mystery about the setting right out from the start - would it be more profitable to let the reader notice e.g. that everybody there is a teenager?

Otherwise, the Duo character is a bit confused and confusing (keep an eye on your dialogue, there, also - I think you're missing some words). Have they just met? If so, he is a scary loon, but in that case again why is Shelle giving him a lecture on her attitude to rebellion and comformity rather than just leaving? Or is Shelle lying to her friends? If people come repeatedly to Ego World, as Vid seems to have, why is Shelle so worried about leaving?

The confrontation with Vid seemed a bit anticlimactic - he breaks her leg and then they walk off? Is this a future thing? Is that what page 5 was doing - showing that people heal incredibly quickly? Only trying to walk on a broken leg, even with somebody helping you, tends not to be conducive to dialogue. And the little brother revelation...I dunno. It didn't really grab me... possibly it is a reference to the fact that they are teenagers, but the whole conflict - the reasoning, the action, the conclusion - seemed rather petty. Also, Vid talks like a supervillain. Is this deliberate?

Interesting. Interesting idea, interesting story. The ending was a bit telegraphed, though, and I think you need to think through the mechanics of Ego World more. Since people are different, I guess people react differently to being stuck on Ego World - Duo vs Shelle, for instance - but there's some confused reactions going on. If everybody eventually goes back to earth, then why is falling in love inappropriate - since you could presumably pick up the other relationship when you both got back? Likewise, what's the attraction of sticking around vs getting out as soon as possible?

There seems to be a built in problem that the MORE antisocial you are, the shorter time you'll spend there, whereas a better socialised person could conceivably spend a really really long time there. What that means in practice is that Ego World would in fact be quite a normal place, and the "real" world would be filled with anti-socials that got out early. I might be misreading it, but that in itself strikes me as an interesting idea...

Sorry, I haven't commented on the story, but those background points were bothering my head while I was reading. From a script point of view, it would be nice to have more description of what Ego World is actually like, how it sounds, smells, looks, feels. I'd like to see a "penalty" caption in every single panel, just to illustrate the all-pervading presence of the guardians and the rigid behaviour codes in place.

You could also use the Guardian "penalty" caption boxes to explain how Ego World works, rather than having Shelle narrate it at the start - that would solve the problem Tannce identified, that of tipping your hand too early on the true nature of Ego World.

The pacing is good, the action zips along nicely. It might be worth giving the characters their own slang - don't go all Clockwork Orange, but something more distinctive for the reader to get into.

I liked the last scene, with the crowd melting into the shadows and the silence. I feel that this is a cinematic script rather than a comic script. Keep the end bit, but expand the final exchange between Shelle and Vid. At the moment it's not entirely clear why Vid changes his mind, what Shelle means, and you can play out the relationship between them more slowly.

Right, let's see the second draft!
