One of the great ones has passed away.

Marlon Brando, who revolutionized American acting with his Method performances in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "On the Waterfront" and went on to create the iconic character of Don Vito Corleone in "The Godfather," has died. He was 80 years old.

Mistah Kurtz... he dead.

(Yeah, I know I already said that in the thread in Conversation, but it needed saying. Um, twice.)

I'm off to have a drink to Marlon's memory right this minute.

I'm absolutely gutted. Brando was my hero.

He was all of our heroes. A kickass bastard who wasn't afraid to bitch at his superiors in the movie industry and tell them what he really thought. We'll all miss him.

I'll miss him. He was so fucking sexy... and such a singular actor. Bob de Niro's the next best thing, but he doesn't really approach Marlon. Suuuch a shag.

He was a contender. He was somebody.

I can hear him shouting "Stella" to me from the other side.

Has anyone else read the excellent profile of Brando in the latest issue of Empire.
Gods Among Us: Marlon Brando

Truly a god who is sadly among us no more.

Not that I doubt that he is in fact gone, but didn't anyone else scratch their head that this should happen roughly a week after it was widely reported in the media that his assets were used up and he was living out of a bungalow in the Hollywood Hills off of residuals and Social Security, and that he'd had his Oscars well-hidden to escape the clutches of his debtors?

He may well have have ended his career with the greatest artifice any actor could hope to do so: playing his own death scene. I think it's a testament to his abilities in his chosen field that the thought even occurs to me.

He was that good.

Damn. I hate it when people die.
